Hybrid Rehab

I believe that every single person has an untapped potential and purpose in this world and are capable of than far more than they realise and I believe that it all starts with a healthy, nourished body

On a daily basis I am privileged enough to work with a wide variety of people of all ages and ability's and help realise just how strong and capable they really are using a variety of different training styles i.e. pure strength, interval conditioning, yoga, strongman style, H.I.I.T, body-building and basic bodyweight conditioning

I don't believe one style is better than the other and that in order to reach your full potential as a human being and athlete you need a hybridization of it all

Now as for diet, nutrition etc. again I believe in a simple almost 'primitive' approach of good nutritious food and an eating protocol similar to our ancestors and everyone who has tried it has experienced reduced or complete lack of cravings, reduced body fat, improved energy, food and mood and subsequent improvements in the rest of their lives.

I’ve called it hip health but this will help your knee, ankle and back too

The idea is to connect with the tissues that are commonly a little tight/restricted, enhance that mind/muscle connection, leading to greater recruitment as we progress through our workout - the load will be disrupted more evenly and we will develop the capacity of these tissues, making them less likely to lock back up

You can mobilise with bands, stretch for hours and do as many hip flows as you like, but unless you develop your neurology, strengthen what is weak, learn to control that which you currently cannot - your hips and body will remain locked

Connect, develop, integrate

My certificate finally came - Master of science, Sport & Exercise Psychology

There’s a story, but the gist is, if I can do it, anyone can and it’s never too late to change paths

In my late teens/early 20s I awoke from a w**d induced haze filing shelves on nights in Tesco, with no idea who I was or what I wanted to do and tbh the only reason I didn’t walk out of that job like every other and college was because I’d found someone I loved who I wanted to take care of

I grafted, fuelled by whatever undiagnosed Tism I’ve got going on, got promoted, got super stressed, medicated with booze/coke and stepped down from management, feeling like an absolute looser, but then I found MMA, quit everything and this is eventually led to me PTIng and opening hybrid

I entered my early 30s with a decent little business but knew I had a lot to learn and somehow blagged my way onto a undergrad with zero A levels to my name

Since then we’ve endured a bogus pandemic and all the nonsense that went with it, we nearly lost Nic and Daisy (Daisy twice) I destroyed my back, closed Hybrid, started all over again, endured my own health battles that left me unable to sleep for more than a few hours, awaking multiple times with a pounding heart, leading to numerous A&E visits, panic attacks, heart scans etc, only to realise that this all too was a result of numerous back and neck injuries that had left my body mangled

But, in spite of this I managed to complete my masters using mostly the computers in local libraries

Degrees aren’t everything but I’m super proud of this because I wanted to quit several times and had every reason not to finish

As I said at the start, if this lunatic with his cross wired brain, inability to sit still - heck I can barely spell - and complete lack of ability to focus on anything that doesn’t interest me can do it, anyone can

Do the thing

The winter arc begins

Testing out a few bits with Alf before we start his testing/winter training in a couple of weeks, hopefully we’ll be joined by a few of his teammates this year which should be fun

This was towards the end of a session with and as you can see from his face he’s pretty knackered at this point - neuro training is super taxing

I just wanted to share an example of how I approach movement farming. You have to look for intention, I feel and watch how Dan is loading the tissue, help him learn how to open the door so to speak, then provide feedback/assistance with the movement - it starts small like this but this intention will gradually build as it has in his other arm

Dans right arm has come on leaps and bounds, helping him to reconnect with friends via his phone and give him back some independence, but his left has a way to go - hence the focus

I cannot fathom how difficult this all is for Dan and while this process may be painstaking it’s hugely rewarding and meeting/working with Dan has completely changed my outlook on rehab/training - thank you Buddy

A little bit about why you see me trying all sorts of different stuff and probably won’t see me in a gym anytime soon

I want to be good at moving, at doing stuff, and I don’t want to spend my days stiff and in pain. I want to be prepared for whatever life throws at me and traditional gym training just doesn’t cut it, if fact it often hurts our ability to move, leaving us stiff, in pain and injured - screw that

30/10/2025

I do my best not comment on the re****ed stuff I see on here, I do contribute my fare share after all, but If there’s one thing that grinds my gears it’s folks who spend their days slagging off everything and everyone, even going as far as to comment on other people’s posts

First off, if this is what you’re spending you’re time doing, you can’t be that busy and you must be s**t, second, who do you think it’s helping? because it ain’t the clients and it ain’t your business because you look like an insecure re**rd shouting into the void

What’s even better is that the folks doing this are usually very closed minded, ego driven individuals who comment on things they have very little experience with, if any

The fact is, no one thing suits everyone and while something may not benefit you, it might be a game changer for others + the more tools in your tool box the better

People act like all this is set in stone, like we’ve figured it all out but as someone who’s dedicated 20+ years of his life to this I can assure you that we know Jack and we’ve barely scratched the surface of how the human body works

A little drill I use to pop my neck/back - I’m just sharing what helps me, don’t try anything if you’re unsure or haven’t been checked out

There’s definitely something to cracking, but despite being trained in spinal manipulations I very rarely use them as I believe in addressing the issues within the tissues first, then correcting movement - pops and cracks usually follow as a natural part of the process

The fact I’m yet to meet a chiropractor who trains also makes me suspicious, but I do think there’s something to it and it would be interesting to find one who trains and get their take on it

Either way the looser I’ve got the more pops and clicks I get + they come way easier and lock up a lot less, and learning to pop my own spine has helped me regain control of my back/neck movement and improved my mobility

Again don’t try if you’re made of glass

I get some of this looks weird when compared to what we traditionally see in the gym but,

I tried the traditional stuff, I excelled in it, got educated in it, lead it, built a business around it, and, it broke me, and each year as the weight on the bar grew, I became less capable

Pain, stiffness, anxiety, this was life and as the injuries piled up, my body closed down, taking my mind with it

Then I went on a side quest that quickly became its own arc and the weirder, more detached from the industry I got, the better I felt

I have 2 working shoulders again, 2 knees and a back that doesn’t hurt 24/7, I can look up at the stars again and take a bath without my head going weird, I sleep without waking up several times with a racing heart, I….. I don’t feel scared doing physical things outside the gym anymore

Ninja warrior feels 10x easier, I’m getting faster, jumping better, I’m more explosive, climbing is easier, my coordination is better, I’m even walking faster without trying and carrying extra weight, what was a 2 hour walk is now 1hour30 + this is all after packing on 7/8 kg since last year

My point? Yeah this stuff may look weird to some, but it all has purpose and I’m feeling great, the experiment continues

Tension is often a protective mechanism, initiated by the body to mitigate the risk of injury and it is both physical and neurological - the most immobile person could do the splits in the absence of their head

Addressing this excess tension requires more than just loosening up the muscles, we need to alter how the brain is interacting with this tissue, teach it that it’s safe to let go

Your skin, fascia, muscles and other soft tissues do more than hold your skeleton together, they’re sensory feedback units, taking in information and making decisions based on what they perceive - we can leverage this to open up the nervous system/body

Using feedback tools like bosu, gym balls, sandbags, water bags etc, can help to build confidence and capacity within the nervous system, just as the right movements can - helping to counteract the excess tension that often results from pain, injury, stress and sadly training

Neuro-Rehab with

It’s probably obvious at this point that I’m a pretty unconventional guy and my approach to rehab/training is no different - I do what feels right/is fun

Granted I’m using my education/experience to guide me, but I also ain’t gonna wait for a study or textbook to tell me that something is worth doing - if I did, Riley wouldn’t be standing and punching pads right now

Research is useful and can provide valuable insight/clues, just as study can, but it’s all just pieces of a seemingly infinite puzzle and it’s our job to keep searching, experimenting and adding to that pool of knowledge

Our healthcare system is broken, the fitness industry is driven by image, followers, money, and rehab has stagnated, leaving people stuck in an endless cycle of banded drills, cold plunges, hip airplanes and bird dogs - we need to level up

A summary of a topic I’m currently researching and find really interesting:

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is more than a pinched nerve — it’s a perfect example of how structure meets function

When the collarbone, first rib, and surrounding muscles compress the brachial plexus and vessels, the body doesn’t just feel local pain — it reacts systemically. Those same nerves carry autonomic (sympathetic) fibres that control blood vessel tone, heart rate, and stress responses

That’s why people with TOS often experience:

→ cold or discoloured hands
→ heart racing, dizziness, or fatigue
→ brain fog, anxiety, and sleep disruption

Your posture and breathing mechanics play a huge role:

• Rounded shoulders or shallow breathing elevate the first rib and tighten scalenes/pec minor

• Diaphragmatic breathing and gentle mobility work restore space and reduce sympathetic drive

The big picture:

TOS isn’t just a structural compression — it’s a postural, autonomic, and emotional loop

Freeing the thoracic outlet helps restore not only movement, but balance throughout the whole nervous system

🩻 Free the space → Calm the system → Restore balance

Interestingly I’ve recently been working with an elderly lady who’s been struggling with postural hypertension due to a neck injury sustained while in hospital - as a result of the condition they’ve refused to do any physio

I’ve taught her how to breathe properly, got her to focus on her posture while getting up and moving around, and given her neck and shoulder mobility drills - everything has normalised and her mood has improved too

The way our meat is organised and moves has impacts far beyond biomechanics and poor posture and movement can disrupt everything from your hormones to your mental state - train accordingly

Was training better and more effective when it was simpler and we had less big box gyms?

Is the fitness industry doing harm as well as good? (Yup)

Have we gone full re**rd with all things fitness?

Why, despite the endless training options, gadgets, cults etc, are people bigger and more unhealthy than ever - hence everyone now relying on fat loss jabs

IMO - it’s all become too complicated, too culty, you can’t just go for a bike ride anyone, you have to do an iron man, you can’t just lift some weights, you need to do a show or shoot, you can’t just do a bootcamp, you have to morph into a shirtless Hybroxer with athlete tattooed across your forehead. Then you have all the injuries, the eating disorders, the identity issues…. it’s all getting weird man and the fitness industry is getting further and further away from everyday people

Physical activity should be fun and nourish your mind/body as well as bring people together, and while gyms do do this, the current culture demands far too much and we’re seeing everyday people with multiple roles/responsibilities developing exercise identities that consume their entire lives

They sacrifice sleep, food, socialising, friendships, relationships, money, careers, their health, all for the sake of a reel or pic to appease the tribe

The gym is mint, training is fun, but it isn’t without cost and the more culty it gets, the less appealing and accessible it is to people
