I’ve always been a keen advocate that a healthy scalp promotes healthy hair growth!

POV- greasing your scalp can lead to scalp and hair problems!

Oiling can create a comedogenic effect on the scalp meaning it can clog and block the hair follicle causing a whole plethora of problems!

If you are applying and building up oils on the scalp and not washing the scalp frequently, this accumulates dead skin cells, dirt, pollution and hosts a wonderful breeding ground for the malassezia yeast ❌

Have a listen to my video to see how the frequency of cleansing your scalp and not oiling your scalp can actually make a huge difference to optimise your scalp health and hair growth in Afro Caribbean skin types.

The hair and scalp have two very different needs!

The scalp microbiome needs balancing whilst kinked, coily curly textured hair needs hydration!

There can be a fine line endorsing good scalp health whilst regularly styling hair as it can be susceptible to breakage by the damaging effects of heat, physical or chemical trauma (or all3!).

A Trichologist can help guide you to your specific needs.

How much do you know about probiotics for gut health? Or even how important gut health actually is?

The truth of the matter is there is so much more about the gut microbiome to be discovered- even us experts will tell you each individual’s gut “ecosystem” is complex and varies from person to person.

A sugar loaded Yakult or fruity gut “healthy” yoghurt is not the answer sadly- wouldn’t it be marvellous if one tablet or drink did all 🙌

Each person’s gut health is unique to you like your fingerprint and the diversity of microbes can change vastly depending on what you eat, dietary changes or lack of fibre, medications, antibiotic use, stress, chronic illnesses, your environment and so much more than you would imagine!

The gut really is the second brain and an organ in itself where over 70% of your immune system lies- inflammation and disease can all start here!

I recently had a conversation with my favourite functional medicine practitioner and BANT qualified nutritionist Charlotte Lucas regarding something that was bought to my attention in clinic regarding the use of probiotics with autoimmune conditions and immunocompromised- two very different things.
Charlotte has kindly demystified this with her power house of gut knowledge in her video.

Eating a varied diet and one rich in fibre, fermented foods and polyphenols can all help support a good gut microbiome. The gut is at the centre of many body functions and processes!

If your gut health is struggling, somebody like Charlotte can help thoroughly investigate your individual symptoms and set you back on the road to recovery.

A happy gut of course can then absorb your nutrients from your food, optimising your health of your skin, hair and scalp 🙌

Always ask an expert before making big changes to your diet or starting probiotics to help keep the ecosystem of your gut balanced and happy!

I always advocate a healthy scalp endorses good hair growth and here we can proudly share an example of this with you 🙌

In just 3 scalp dermabrasion treatments, a 360 holistic approach and some fantastic commitment from my patient at home you can see her progress 👌

My lovely patient had unfortunately lost a lot of hair due to the scalp inflammation and the itching of seborrheic eczema.

Our pictures show with the right knowledge, guidance and treatment you can really help control the symptoms of eczema and endorse hair growth.

Stop the guesswork and spending out on multiple products and visit a Trichologist to support you into your correct scalp treatment plan.

Do you need some help with your tweenager’s scalp care?

Are you finding their scalps are presenting dandruff?

This can be embarrassing and make anyone feel self conscious at the best of times- let alone a child.

Dandruff is so common as their bodies are changing with all the dreaded hormones kicking in- watch the video for some tips on balancing the scalp microbiome.

For persistent or inflammatory scaling, you may need to seek professional help. One size does not fit all without a bespoke treatment plan via a correct diagnosis from an expert.

Don’t forget to like and share this post to your school Mums and Dads👌

My Hairy History!

My name is Lisa Gilbey and I am a registered full member & former Governor of 7 years for the prestigious Institute of Trichologists. I began in the world of hair at 14 as a Saturday girl in the Steiner Hair & Beauty salon, Peterborough and then fulfilled my apprenticeship with Michael John Hair Artwork team and worked in their Queensgate branch as a junior stylist. I worked in a few great salons in Wellingborough gaining experience with the public plus lots of chin wagging and heads passing through my fingertips (my favorite long standing salon being the fabulous girls at the Headquarters, Gold Street in Wellingborough). I then decided to change my direction from the scissors to the medical books. At the age of 25 I wanted to further my career under the medical and scientific aspect of hair as I saw an array of problems that people needed answers for that they just weren’t getting the help for! In 2005 I started studying with the Institute of Trichologists (the longest established respected Trichology organisation recognised worldwide). I passed my gruelling exams in 2007, gained full membership after another 2 years of mentoring, elected a Governor and also employed by the Institute as their public liaison advisor assisting with media work and public enquiries. Consulting as a Trichologist I have seen a multitude of hair and scalp disorders between my own clinic and also from when I was head hunted and worked at a top Harley Street clinic in London and Birmingham. I enjoy my position as a Trichologist, not only as I am passionate about helping people diagnose and treat their hair and scalp concerns, but also for the fact that I have the ability to reduce the stress and anxiety of what it does psychologically to them. It is a very satisfying element of my job when people leave with a smile on their face, even in the most difficult situations.
