One of the questions I get asked a lot is:

“What’s the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor?”

Both professions work with the musculoskeletal system and both aim to help reduce pain, improve movement, and support recovery.

We’re simply trained with slightly different approaches and treatment styles.

One of the most noticeable differences patients often mention is treatment time and technique.

Chiropractic treatments are often shorter and tend to focus more specifically on spinal adjustments (the quick movements that may create a “cracking” sound in joints).

Osteopathic treatment, on the other hand, typically involves more hands-on soft tissue work, stretching, joint mobilisation and then the manipulations (cracking of joints)

Also addressing how different areas of the body interact as a whole.

Because of this, osteopathic appointments are usually longer.

Neither approach is inherently “better” they’re simply different styles within manual therapy, and both professions can help many people with pain and movement issues.

My goal as an osteopath is always to understand the bigger picture of what’s going on in the body and tailor treatment accordingly.

If you’ve ever wondered about the differences, hopefully that gives a little clarity.

And if you have any questions about osteopathy or manual therapy in general, feel free to ask 👇

Many headaches actually start in the neck.

These are called cervicogenic headaches meaning the pain originates from the cervical spine (neck) but is often felt in the head, temples, behind the eyes, or at the base of the skull.

One of the biggest triggers I see in clinic is stress.

When we’re stressed, we unconsciously tighten the muscles around the neck, shoulders, and jaw.

Over time this creates tension, irritation of the joints, and increased sensitivity in the nerves that refer pain into the head.

Common signs of a cervicogenic headache:

• Pain starting in the neck or base of the skull
• Headaches linked to long periods at a desk or phone use
• Stiffness or reduced neck movement
• Pain often on one side of the head
• Headaches that worsen with stress
The good news is that many of these headaches respond very well to hands-on treatment, improving neck mobility, and reducing muscular tension.

If you’re someone who regularly reaches for painkillers but never addresses the source, it might be worth looking at the neck.
Your body is often telling a deeper story.

Shoulder pain isn’t always just a shoulder problem.

Many people are surprised to learn that pain in the shoulder can actually be linked to the neck and upper spine.

The nerves that supply the shoulder and arm originate in the neck. If joints in the cervical spine become stiff, irritated, or overloaded, it can sometimes refer pain into the shoulder, upper arm, or even down the arm.

That’s why, when someone comes to see me with shoulder pain, I don’t just examine the shoulder joint itself.
As an osteopath, I assess the whole system including:

• The shoulder joint and surrounding muscles
• The neck and upper spine
• Nerve mobility and possible irritation
• Posture and movement patterns
Treatment may involve a combination of:

• Gentle joint mobilisation
• Soft tissue and muscle release techniques
• Improving movement in the neck and upper back
• Targeted rehabilitation advice
The aim isn’t simply to chase the pain it’s to identify the true source of the problem and help restore normal movement and function.

If you’ve been struggling with persistent shoulder pain, especially if it’s associated with neck stiffness or arm symptoms, it may be worth having both areas assessed.

Is it Sciatica?

Sciatica. Nerve pain. That deep ache and pain that shoots down the leg and refuses to settle.

Most people think the problem is just in the leg or buttock.

But nerve pain is rarely that simple.
As an osteopath, I assess the entire chain from the spine, pelvis and hips, through the muscles, fascia and nerves that all influence how your body moves and loads.

Using a combination of precise hands-on techniques, I can help reduce pressure on irritated nerves and restore better movement through the body.

Treatment may include:

• Joint mobilisation
• Soft tissue techniques
• Muscle release
• Neural mobility work
• Postural and movement guidance

The goal isn’t just short-term relief.
It’s helping your body move better, load better, and heal better.

If you’re struggling with sciatica, nerve pain, or persistent back and leg symptoms there are often effective solutions when the problem is approached correctly.

Not all headaches start in the head.
Cervicogenic headaches often begin in the neck caused by joint restriction, muscle tension, or irritation in the upper cervical spine.
You might feel:

• Pain starting at the base of the skull
• One-sided head pain
• Stiffness when turning your neck
• Headaches triggered by posture
The good news?

When the neck moves better, the head often feels better too.
Treatment focuses on restoring movement, reducing tension, and improving how your neck and upper back function together.

Less strain.
Better movement.
Fewer headaches.

“Painkillers don’t fix pain.
They change how your brain perceives it.”

Most common pain medication works by:

• Blocking inflammatory chemicals (like prostaglandins)
• Reducing nerve signal transmission
• Altering how the brain processes pain
Which can be helpful short term.

But here’s the issue 👇
If the underlying problem is:

– Joint restriction
– Poor movement mechanics
– Tendon overload
– Muscle imbalance
– Chronic tissue irritation
…numbing the signal doesn’t remove the cause.

It simply turns the volume down. 🤷‍♂️

And when you keep moving on a muted warning system, you can overload tissues further.

Pain is information.

The goal isn’t just to silence it
it’s to understand why it’s there.

The Cheshire Osteopath

Offering an unrivalled, private, bespoke service and treatment to the more discerning patient.

Hello I’m John Corfield (M.Ost) ‘Master of Osteopathy’ thank you for visiting my page. I Hope this signifies the start of you wanting to do something about the pain you are suffering and its not just because you’ve heard from a reliable source that I serve very good coffee with hot or cold milk, a glass of iced cold water with a slice of lemon on request, often subject my patients to ‘Absolute 80’s’ on the radio whilst treating you in front of a log burning fire (which you need to keep an eye on when I have my back to it so it doesnt go out) … it’s no coincidence my patient numbers rocket come winter?….Any how the list goes on and on…I’ll tell you, It’s endless. Notwithstanding the above I can help if you suffering acute pain from simply sleeping awkward, putting your socks on in the morning, sitting on the toilet and not being able to stand up again, putting washing in the washing machine and feeling like you’ve been hit by a bolt of lightning, reaching up into a cupboard and feeling a sharp pain in your neck or shoulder, lifting your child, wife, husband, dog, cat or hamster up, wearing high heels on a night out and can’t walk the day after. There is nothing I haven’t heard whilst taking a case history, from the sad, very sad, unfortunate, funny, very funny, very very very funny, bizarre, crazy or just plain stupid….who am I to judge? Sometime it’s the more chronic long term pain that brings patients to my clinic brought about by years of office based, physical or driving work, it’s likely even the daily stresses that have caused you discomfort. Don’t delay it any longer. I’m a Wilmslow based Osteopath but serve people from all over the East Cheshire area. Having suffered a lower back injury over 15 years ago wrestling, did you just snigger at that? (Definately not the WWF or Giant Haystacks & Big Daddy kind of wrestling) no capes or masks I’m sad to say, what I can say is after that disc herniation and being in terrible pain for a very long time I can completely empathise with most of my patients, be it frustration from sub standard treatment from other providers to the effect medication and pain has on you. Nobody wants to change that more than me, because I know how much it means. Sometimes it’s just about finding ‘the one’ ooooh looks like you already have, so all you’ve got to do now is call me on 01625 836 816 or book online 24/7… in fact here have my mobile number too and feel free to text me if your to bashful to call…it’s 07903 833 744 I can’t tell you how much I look forward to helping people currently suffering from pain and those wanting to prevent it. (Well I can but I’ll have to contact my website people and ask for another page to be added) I am experienced in helping people who suffer from a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, I do however specialise in the treatment of lower back, hip, neck and or shoulder pain, it probably accounts for around 90% of my patients and is the reason why I have such a strong reputation. Notwithstanding the above below is a list of what I help people with, including pointing them in the direction of fantastic food.
