Christmas is coming. Well-meaning family and friends may think it’s a good idea to buy your little one a device such as a walker or a bouncer for Christmas. Looks fun, but just don’t! Blame me and ask for something else. A baby’s spine starts out in a gentle “C” shape, just as it was curled in the womb. As they grow, it gradually develops into an “S” shape through key milestones like tummy time, rolling, crawling, and standing. Modern baby gadgets can get in the way of this natural process.
Bouncers, bumbo seats, walkers, jumperoos - anything that props your baby into a position they can’t hold on their own places extra stress on the spine and developing joints. For example, jumpers can load the hips too early, encourage toe-walking, and cause tightness through the trunk.
Whenever you can, let your baby move freely on the floor. That’s how they learn balance, coordination, and strength - naturally and safely. Feel free to blame me when you ask for the receipt to return the well-meaning gift. Buy some books with the money instead. It’s never to early to read to your baby - “We’re going on a Bear Hunt” and “The Guffalo” for instance are great fun for both you and your baby.
