A skin lesion is any lump, bump or flat mark on the skin. Skin lesions are very common and, in most cases, harmless. However, in order to protect yourself against skin cancer, it is key to understand what to look out for and when to seek professional advice.
Skin lesions can include blood vessel formations, scar tissue, thickened or rough lesions, pigmented patches, nodules, ulcers etc. To spot potential skin cancer, check the skin lesion for ‘ABCDE’ as follows:
• Asymmetry
• Border irregularity
• Colour – multiple, uneven or varied
• Diameter greater than 6mm
• Evolving or Elevated
Any new or actively changing lesions should never be ignored, as they can sometimes signal skin cancer or other underlying conditions. A professional skin check allows suspicious lesions to be examined thoroughly with a dermatoscope which enables detailed examination of skin structures not visible to the naked eye. It also provides an opportunity to discuss sun protection and sun avoidance strategies.
Early detection, education and prevention are essential in reducing the risk of skin cancer. To book an appointment at The Walcote Practice with Dr Annabel Freeborough, Specialist Doctor In Dermatology: Phone 01962 828715
