I stumbled upon this picture today..... and it landed.

Vicarious trauma is a sneaky one.

As a trainer, therapist and supervisor working with front line professionals in the arena of safeguarding, trauma and abuse, the hidden impact of vicarious trauma mustn't be minimised or ignored. This is especially important for those front line professionals to remember.

We care, we want to help, we listen, we advise, we support, we walk alongside those suffering, we focus on those struggling to our detriment, we lose sight of our own reality and take on another's, we respond according to that reality - sneaky vicarious trauma....

Let this serve as a reminder that we are good at our jobs because we empathise, but remember to turn that empathy inwards.

Take the breaks you need, self care is radical, boundaried, strong - not just a bubble bath. Self care is brave, not everyone understands or sees vicarious trauma. Self care in these circumstances is being scared of people perceiving it as weakness when it is you being scared or apprehensive and doing it anyway. Brave.

Remember your core values and who you are. Be gentle with your brave self.

📕 Not Today Celeste! By Liza Stevens

💭 This book is about a little dog whose human experiences depression

It talks of how the little dog Celeste is happy but notices something different and worrying about her owner. It discusses how someone close by is able to support and explain depression in a child (and dog) friendly way.

I think this book is great because it explains how changes in parents/carers can be noticed, but also what help-seeking looks like and the importance of connection. I believe connection with others is a wonderful medicine for all sorts of difficulties, and in particular – low mood.

I particularly like that the focus of the book is on the experiences of the dog Celeste rather than a child. This may help give little ones reading this book distance from their own experience, enabling empathy and understanding rather than introspection, taking a different perspective and make sense of the scenario. There is also the message throughout that you may question whether you are “good enough” or “doing something wrong” but that actually you are awesome and loved unconditionally.

Parents/carers could read this with their children, as could education professionals supporting a child going through parent/carer depression in their household. I'd say it was appropriate for little ones, perhaps 4 and up. There is also a helpful Guide for Parents, Carers and Professionals at the back written by Dr Pooky Knightsmith to help support conversations and feelings exploration.

This book is compassionate and clever

📕 You Make Your Parents Super Happy by Ricky K. Chandler

💭 This book is about a little one whose parents/carers are separating.

It talks of how it might be in the house before people decide to separate in simple, child sensitive ways. It then talks of how loved a child is in spite of parents/carers not being able to live together anymore.

This book acknowledges difficult feelings a child may have around this time (it’s scary, sad and unexpected) but the theme through it all is the love that people have for their child regardless. What I also love is that it is uses gender neutral language.

Parents/carers could read this with their children, as could education professionals supporting a child going through household separation or family members. I'd say it was appropriate for little ones, perhaps 3 and up.

This book is inclusive and insightful.
