March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Early detection is really important but the symptoms are very non-specific, so knowing what to look out for and getting it checked out, can be life-saving.

Nearly every one of our patients tells us their libido is low. In women it is much more complicated than in men and it often becomes even more complex during the perimenopause / menopause.

It's important to recognise it and understand it is really common and there are things we can do about it.

Standing in front of The Cradle today at the Musée d’Orsay felt particularly fitting for International Women’s Day.

The painting was created by Berthe Morisot in 1872 — one of the few women recognised within the Impressionist movement. It depicts her sister watching over her sleeping child, a quiet moment of motherhood captured with tenderness and realism.

But this painting is also about something deeper.

At the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, Morisot was the only woman artist exhibiting under her own name. Critics at the time described her work as having “feminine qualities” — language that reflected the biases women faced in the art world.

More than 150 years later, women continue to navigate expectations around caregiving, careers, health, and identity.

In our clinical work we see this every day — the invisible load many women carry while moving through different life stages: fertility, motherhood, perimenopause and menopause.

Art like this reminds us that women’s experiences have always been present, even if they weren’t always fully recognised or understood.

This International Women’s Day feels like a good moment to pause and reflect on how far we’ve come — and how important it is that women’s health, voices and experiences continue to move out of the shadows and into the centre of the conversation.

Dr Beth has a really important update regarding menopause and mental health, following a recent poll conducted by The Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Overall they found there is a concerning lack of awareness in the general population that menopause can have an effect on mental health - be it new mental health issues or a relapse of existing issues.

See a link to their position statement in the comments below.

When can you stop using contraception?

Although after the age of 37 fertility drops, women still get caught out in their 40s and during the approach to the menopause, when ovulation can occur chaotically and unpredictably. It’s therefore important to use a proper method of contraception, such as condoms, a vasectomy, a sterilization, the progesterone only pill, the combined pill, the injection, the implant or the hormone or copper coil.

But when can you stop worrying about it?

The general rules are:

🌸 If you have your last natural period before age 50, you need contraception for 2 more years
🌸 If you have your last natural period after 50, you need contraception for one more year
🌸 Most women require no contraception after age 55

But it can be confusing, especially if you are taking hormones.

If you need advice about your contraception options or help working out when to safely stop, talk to your GP. We are happy to help too.

Is collagen a supplement worth taking during perimenopause?

There's been a really interesting publication today of a large umbrella review looking at all the evidence for the use of collagen.

Have you been wondering if it's something you should be adding to your perimenopause toolkit? Have a listen to Dr Sam's summary of the review and her thoughts as to whether it's worth trying.
