‘Tis the season to be merry!’
The struggle for problem drinkers during the Christmas season is perhaps more pronounced than at any other time of the year. Everywhere we turn there seems to be the opportunity for ‘enjoying’ a tipple or two or three or more ! From the works Christmas party, the family get together or an afternoons trip to a Christmas market, we can partake in a readily available glass of mulled wine to a flute of champagne and everything and anything else in between, including alcohol laden Christmas cakes, chocolates, fruits and even marshmallows ( as I discovered last year ! ) It’s a landscape of alcoholic permission veiled under the mantra of, “ Oh go on it’s Christmas!”
But If you’re battling with alcohol issues, this seasonal societal permissiveness, which it has to be said is completely at odds with the rest of the year when we are all told we should know our limits and drink responsibly, creates an internal vs external paradoxical conflict for the problem drinker. The internal utter misery, desperation and desolation of alcoholism is battered down and silenced amidst the external metaphorical collective noise of alcoholic merriment and fun.
However It has to be said ......there is, never can be, or ever will be any fun or merriment when drinking has become addictive.
If you need help and understanding with your drinking you don’t have to feel alone, there is support whatever time of the year it is !!
