GUT HEALTH 💩😵‍💫

For many of my IBS and gut health clients, Christmas used to mean bloating, reflux, constipation, diarrhoea, and feeling uncomfortable every single day. This year, several of them are experiencing their first calm Christmas gut in years because of the work we have already done together. It's great feedback to get. 🤩

Christmas can be a tricky time for digestion, but a few simple strategies make a huge difference. These are some of the ones I share with my clients:

1️⃣ Add fermented foods like kefir, live yoghurt, sauerkraut or kimchi to support your gut microbiome and reduce bloating
2️⃣ Eat slowly. Digestion starts in the mouth, and rushing meals is one of the biggest drivers of reflux, bloating, and discomfort
3️⃣ Support your gut lining with foods like bone broth, flaxseeds, oily fish, walnuts and olive oil
4️⃣ Stay hydrated, especially if you are having alcohol or rich foods
5️⃣ Post-party reset. A gentle morning with warm water, movement, and a gut-loving smoothie with spinach, kefir, chia and ginger can work wonders

Gut health affects your energy, mood, hormones and immune system, not just your digestion. It can also really dampen your social life

If this Christmas has made your diarrhoea, bloating, painful gas, constipation or reflux worse, you do not need to accept that as “normal”. Because I assure you, it's not. In 2026, we can get to the bottom of why your symptoms are happening and fix them properly, not just manage them.

The health topics that will define 2026

I love this strange pocket of time between Christmas and New Year. The days blur together, routines soften, and there is often just enough mental space to read something properly for the first time in months. So I wanted to share a small Twixmas edit of the most read and most relevant health topics....

ALCOHOL 🥳🍷🍾🍸
Alcohol Tips for the New Year Festivities🥂

Enjoy the cheer, support your health! Here’s how to drink smarter this season:🍹
1. Prep your liver: Drink a smoothie with broccoli sprouts, spinach, lemon, and ginger a few hours before drinking. These support your liver’s detox pathways.🍹
2. Eat protein first. Protein-rich snacks (boiled eggs, nuts, Greek yogurt) slow alcohol absorption and keep blood sugar steady.🍹
3. Stay hydrated: Follow the “one-for-one” rule—alternate alcoholic drinks with water. Aim for at least 500ml per drink to reduce sluggishness the next day.🍹
4. Choose low-sugar options: Spirits with soda water and lime or dry wines keep sugar and calories low. Skip the sugary mixers!🍹
5. Support your recovery: The morning after, hydrate well, add electrolytes, and enjoy antioxidant-rich foods like berries, green tea, or a smoothie with spinach and chia seeds.

Enjoying mindfully means feeling better during and after the celebrations. 🎉

SLEEEEEEEEP!

As a nutritionist, I talk a lot about how nutrition can transform your energy. From the right balance of nutrients to uncovering deficiencies, what you eat plays a huge role in how you feel every day. But if you're putting all your focus into nutrition and ignoring your sleep, you’re only solving half the puzzle.

Here’s the truth: good nutrition can do wonders for your energy levels, but without enough quality sleep, you’ll always hit a wall.

Why Sleep Is Non-Negotiable for Energy
When we think about energy, most people picture food. And while food certainly fuels our body, sleep is the time when our body restores itself. This isn’t just about feeling refreshed in the morning; sleep is when critical processes happen behind the scenes:
🍏Cellular repair: Your body uses sleep to repair tissues, muscles, and cells that keep you functioning well.
🍏Brain detox: While you sleep, your brain clears out toxins that build up throughout the day (no wonder poor sleep leads to brain fog!).
🍏Hormonal balance: Sleep regulates hormones like cortisol, insulin, and leptin, which impact stress, hunger, and energy levels.
🍏Immune support: Deep sleep is when your body produces cytokines—key immune system messengers that lower inflammation and support overall immunity.

Party-Ready Energy Tips🥂
Heading to a big party? Set yourself up for success with these quick tips:

1️⃣ Don’t arrive starving. A protein- or fibre-rich snack before leaving keeps you satisfied. Options: an apple with almond butter, a small handful of nuts, or a protein smoothie with spinach, chia seeds, and berries.
2️⃣ Balance your plate. Start with protein like turkey or salmon to keep blood sugar steady. Add a big serving of fibre-rich veggies, then choose carbs like sweet potatoes or whole grains.
3️⃣ Enjoy mindfully. Savour each bite and listen to your body’s hunger cues. It’s easier to feel satisfied when you slow down and appreciate your food.
4️⃣ Hydrate between drinks. Alternate each alcoholic drink with a glass of water to stay energized and reduce next-day sluggishness. You know this. Do you do it?
5️⃣ Don’t skip meals. It’s tempting to skip breakfast or lunch before a big meal, but this can cause overeating later and leave you feeling worse overall.

Small steps = big energy wins.

You don’t need to be perfect

You do not need to eat perfectly over Christmas to protect your health.

What matters most is what you do most of the time. One higher sugar day does not derail your hormones, gut, or metabolism. What keeps people stuck is the all-or-nothing mindset.

If you can prioritise:

🍏Protein with meals
🍏Some fibre daily
🍏Gentle movement
🍏Sleep when you can

then you are already supporting blood sugar, digestion, and energy far more than you think.

If you would like personalised support going into 2026, I have January availability and offer a free Health Review https://my.practicebetter.io/ #/6129047639803303a0af2408/bookings?s=62f4ee2a024d82abfe83aafb&step=date

The real reason so many feel exhausted at 40+

Perimenopause symptoms are real and valid. Many women notice changes in their 40s and hormones absolutely play a role. But low energy, brain fog and feeling flat are not always driven by hormones alone. Midlife is often the point where deeper imbalances finally show themselves. What has been quietly...

Inflammation gets a bad reputation, but it’s not all negative. In fact, we wouldn’t be alive without acute inflammation. It’s how your body responds to injury, infection, or stress.

Think of a sprained ankle - it swells, reddens, and heats up. That’s your immune system rushing in to repair tissue and clear out damage. Once the job is done, the inflammation resolves and healing begins.😃

But when inflammation doesn’t switch off - when it becomes chronic and low-grade - it starts to cause problems. And this is where functional medicine steps in.

Take a look at my blog where I delve in to what it is, what conditions or symptoms may mean you are inflamed, and what to do about it💪💪💪

I've been a bit quiet on here recently, but wanted to pop on and share my love of fibre! If you are not having a daily 💩, if you have high cholesterol, if you are perimenopausal, want to lose weight, want a healthy immune system, and so, so much more - then you should read this 😍

People who eat the most fibre live longer and have lower risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and several cancers. Yet in the UK, the recommendation is 30g per day and the average intake is only about 18g. Clinically, I see clients who eat far less. That gap is costing us.
