I spy Pilates TEACHERS in the making....

Never underestimate how challenging it is to teach this method well.

These guys are really still at the start of their journey but I truly saw some super developments today and I am proud of them.

Teaching what, why, how, and learning to not simply throw teaching points out but taking stock to observe...

Learning to teach Pilates Matwork is essential for foundations prior to learning to teach using all apparatus (or even just Reformer) with the required awareness to truly support clients.

Stage 1 face to face practical weekends almost done in Aberdeen.

As Pilates Method Teachers, even in group class it's important to see our participants as individuals with unique bodies and to TEACH awareness for our participants to take back control of that and not mindlessly throw out one size fits all movement. That doesn't help anyone.

You are NOT a sheep (as a Teacher or participant). You need not or should not follow the herd. It's so vitally important to listen in to your own body and what's right for you day to day against objectives then modify accordingly.

Every body tells a story - what's yours today?

More than 'fitness'. More than movement....

Oh....and I might be in Black Sheep Coffee having my brekky before my teaching day begins (amazing reminders) 💜

Honestly....

Exhausted already but so grateful for a group of dedicated learners.
They're no doubt pretty overwhelmed (but a little excited for the journey ahead)

Becoming a true TEACHER of the Pilates Method requires dedication. We don't give away 'quick' certifications. So worth the effort, however to enable our participants to understand this is more than 'fitness' and is the foundation for all other movement disciplines.

Starting their journey in Pilates.

Learning the power of principles and method with the approach for beginners/mixed ability groups.

Half way to Aberdeen 💙.

I forgot how much I love a good train journey, particularly when the journey leads to helping potential new Pilates Teachers to start their continuous journey 👌.

Now do you know what the x3 main 'global' spine extensors are? And do you know the optimal spine position for recruiting the Multifidus? Absolutely geeking out via the reads 📚 😁. Some folks choose to read fiction....

Prepping Stage 1 weekend 1 practical content for both UK regulated and internationally recognized L3/MK Diploma in Pilates Matwork blended learning qualifications with up north at the lovely Aberdeen this weekend 👌.

I'm excited to be able to offer my significant experience (note... I'm very much still learning) to assist students at the start of their Pilates teaching career and enabling them to be the best teachers, not merely instructors of this contemporary approach with awareness of the traditional Contrology method. Never forget your roots!

Lots of learning and assessments for these full qualifications to give them the best start in teaching both group and private Matwork Pilates for all levels from foundation to advanced. Support provided all the way!

Matwork, principles and foundations are key to really understanding the Pilates Method inside out. Not only is the certificate required to hold for insurance purposes in the UK (please check the level of training with your Teacher) but enabling a greater understanding of the full system of apparatus if we choose to go onto learn to teach on Reformer, Cadillac/Tower, Chair, Barells and more.

Remember, for Teachers and participants, your 🏡 is only as strong as the foundations it was built upon ✅.

Look forward to meeting you Aberdeen team!

In a world where it seems that EVERYTHING is being classed as Pilates I say....

If method and principles and at least an awareness of original movement objectives are not missed we miss the ✨.

I can be creative for sure (I personally fall somewhere between a classical and contemporary teacher), but always with an objective in mind. Here...push up prep with a focus on shoulder stability and centre strength endurance. Single leg extension prep with double arms - centre strength endurance against load with of course simple coordination principle applied with the addition of double arms. Not traditional...but principles applied.

When movement becomes so overly complicated, understanding of purpose/objective of what we're doing disappears and it all just seems a little pointless. (I'm not convinced teachers or participants know the why of what they're doing some of the time and I find that really concerning).

Can we apply principles to traditional gym based exercise? Of course we can and should. After all the point of learning the Pilates method is to help us grow in awareness, strengthen weaker links and become better at all the other activities of life. But it's not helpful and pretty confusing for participants and indeed new/aspiring Teachers to name everything as Pilates.

As an educator in this industry today, my (time served) suggestions for new Teachers (and indeed for participants to be aware of) are as follows..

What makes Pilates stand out and become truly transformation over time is the application of method 💜.

Keep things SIMPLE. In drawing attention to movement fundamentals we become present and aware of our body. We are only as strong as our weakest links and by adding in flashy big movement the chances are we may continue to over compensate with areas that are already over worked. Challenge by all means, but challenge without struggle and always be aware of the why if you do challenge. Remember, our house is only as strong as the foundations it was built up on 🏡 .

Please. Know your anatomy and physiology then, without getting too complicated, educate your participants as to the why behind your movement choices ✅.

Last night our wee Elementary Pilates community was treated to an in person pop up Yoga session with the truly incredible Teacher that is Alex 💜.

Alex is back for a number of in-person sessions at St.Johns Hall Greenside on Saturdays 9.15am during August, September and October while I'm delivering Pilates Teacher Training in sunny Aberdeen with FitIQ/MK Pilates.

I am a great believer in bringing the best wellbeing Teachers to our family/audience to support whole health. I absolutely believe in Pilates as the foundation for all movement disciplines, however I am so very grateful to have a network of incredible professionals who are ready and willing to offer us even more. It's most definitely not all about me and collaboration (with the right people who move from a place of service first) is key to supporting our community. I am only one person.

In stepping out of our perceived comfort zones and environments we grow physically and mentally (this can include small steps such as moving your mat into a different position in the room 😅) and I encourage being open to all forms of physical wellbeing practices.

To include practices that marry physical, spiritual, mental (mind, body, spirit) to support total wellbeing is vital for us to truly thrive. For us to grow in mental and physical resilience. For us to become aware of our unique selves ☯️.

Of course, there's the social side of total wellbeing too.... And as it was a Friday evening it would have been rude not to pop next door into the best establishment in the world for a wee tonic water 😁🍷!

Maybe next time I might even get some snaps of the session itself 😅. Social media/marketing expert I am not 🤣.

Speaking of next time, watch this space for new live and online pop up sessions incoming.

Follow us via Elementary Pilates on the Gymcatch platform to see upcoming sessions... I am also attempting to update the website with some super recommended events, courses and retreats delivered by myself and a host of collaborative partners over the coming few months.
