Myth vs Fact 🍎📚
Myth: Fruits are “free foods” and can be eaten in unlimited amounts if you have diabetes.
Fact: Fruits contain natural sugars and carbohydrates, which raise blood glucose levels. While fruits are nutritious, portion size, timing, and pairing with protein or fibre are important for better blood sugar control.
✔️ Enjoy fruit mindfully
✔️ Choose appropriate portions
✔️ Include it as part of a balanced meal

Blood glucose meters and CGMs both help track glucose levels—but they work in different ways. 🩸📊
Glucose levels change with food, exercise, medication, and illness. While blood glucose meters use finger-prick testing, CGMs continuously monitor glucose without a blood sample.
Understanding the difference can help you feel more informed when managing diabetes—for yourself or someone you care about. 💙

T in the Diabetes Alphabet stands for "Type"

Type 1 diabetes develops if the body is unable to produce any insulin. It is managed with a healthy diet, insulin injections and regular physical activity.

Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). It can be managed in a variety of ways including diet, physical activity, tablets or insulin injections.

Let’s bust a common myth 👀
Being overweight doesn’t automatically mean someone will develop Type 2 diabetes. While weight is a risk factor, things like exercise, genetics, and age also play a role. 💙

Skipping Breakfast

Did you know that not eating in the morning can actually make your blood sugar higher later in the day?🍽️

When you skip breakfast, your body releases extra stress hormones to keep your energy up. Those hormones can make you more insulin resistant, which means your blood sugar can spike after both lunch and dinner — even if you eat normally later on.

So while skipping breakfast might feel harmless, your blood sugar may tell a different story. 📈

A balanced morning meal can help keep your numbers steadier all day.

A test strip is a tiny, smart strip that reads a small amount of your blood and helps the meter tell you your blood glucose or blood ketone level.

Think of it as the little helper that lets your meter “see” what’s going on in your body.

What is DKA? 🤔

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) happens when your body doesn’t have enough insulin, so it starts breaking down fat for fuel. This creates ketones, which can build up in the blood and become dangerous if levels get too high.

Save this post to reference when checking your ketones and also for a reminder of the symptoms to look out for.

If ketones are high and you feel unwell, seek medical help ASAP. Early action can prevent a serious emergency. 💙
