Meningitis B (MenB) vaccination enquiries

We are currently receiving a high number of calls to the surgery regarding the MenB vaccination.

The MenB vaccine is routinely offered at the surgery only to children under the age of 2 years, in line with the UK childhood immunisation schedule. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide this vaccine to patients over this age group.

If you wish to arrange MenB vaccination for someone aged over 2 years, this may be available privately through some pharmacies or travel clinics, where a charge will apply.

MenB vaccination was introduced into the UK routine immunisation schedule in 2015. Therefore, anyone born before this time is unlikely to have received the MenB vaccine as part of their routine childhood vaccinations.

The MenACWY vaccine is routinely offered in school at around 13–14 years of age (Year 9). This vaccine can be given up to the age of 25 for those who remain eligible.

Salt plays an important role in the body, but too much can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Many processed foods contain hidden salt, so it’s easy to consume more than recommended. On the other hand, very low salt levels can sometimes contribute to symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness or fluid balance issues, especially if combined with dehydration.

Staying well hydrated, keeping active and aiming for a balanced diet can help support healthy blood pressure. Understanding how salt affects your body can help you make informed choices. 🧂💧🩺✨

Do you know the signs? 🧠🩹

Meningitis and septicaemia are serious conditions that can affect anyone, and they can progress incredibly quickly—often within just a few hours.

Early symptoms can look like a common cold or flu (fever, vomiting, headaches), but there are specific red flags to watch out for:

Meningitis Symptoms:

Stiff neck and a dislike of bright lights.

Confusion or delirium.

Severe sleepiness or fits.

Septicaemia Symptoms:

Very cold hands and feet.

Rapid breathing and shivering.

A rash that does not fade under pressure (use the glass test!).

Important: Don’t wait for a rash to appear. If you are worried about yourself, a friend, or your child, seek medical help urgently. Early treatment saves lives.
