Ollie's world almost turned upside down during his wife's labour. But thanks to the life-saving intervention of our maternity team at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, his wife and daughter are here with him today.

Now, Ollie is taking on the 2026 London Marathon to give back to the team that kept his family whole.

His goal is to raise £3,000 for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity's Hold the Moment Maternity Appeal in gratitude of the team who saved the lives of both his wife and daughter.

The appeal has already funded:
🌟 Buddy Beds so partners can stay close during those first vital days.
🌟 Jaundice Meters for instant, non-invasive testing for newborns.
🌟 An improved Maternity Bereavement Suite to offer dignity and peace to families in their hardest moments.

Ollie said: "If it wasn’t for the maternity team, I wouldn’t have the two most important people in my life with me today. Running to raise funds and give back to the people who saved my family makes it truly meaningful.”

“They saved our little boy’s life” 🙏💝
Zoe and Matthew thanked our children's ward for saving the life of their newborn son.

The couple rushed their three week old son Thomas to Worcestershire Royal Hospital when he quickly became seriously unwell shortly before Christmas.

He was admitted to the Riverbank children’s ward where he needed ongoing care to help him breathe.

The family spent Christmas Day in Worcestershire Royal Hospital while Thomas remained under close observation. Despite the difficult situation, ward staff ensured the family had a memorable day together.

“Our other little one came to visit, and we all had the most special day we could,” said Thomas’ mum, Zoe.

“We even had visits from Father Christmas and presents at the end of Thomas’ cot,” added dad, Matthew.

A few days later, Thomas’ condition worsened significantly and the hospital's critical care team were called. "They told us he might have to be put in an induced coma and transferred to the Birmingham Intensive Care Unit," explained Zoe.

Instead ward staff tried further increasing the pressure and oxygen percentage delivered through a CPAP machine to keep his airways open and support his life-threatening breathing problems.

Thomas eventually began to improve and was able to come off the CPAP treatment. After several more days of monitoring, he was finally discharged home with his relieved and grateful parents.

Zoe said: “At our lowest point, the doctors and nurses did absolutely everything they could - not just to care for Thomas, but to support us emotionally as well. The staff were amazing and I can’t thank them enough. They saved my little boy’s life and we will be forever grateful!”

Reflecting on their time in hospital over Christmas, Matthew added: “The support we received from the ward team kept us going through such a difficult time. They saved Thomas’ life, kept us all sane, and made sure our other son felt supported and involved. They have been amazing and are a real credit to the NHS.”

Mum-of-two Emilia was diagnosed with blood cancer just before Christmas.

She's been cared for at Worcestershire Royal Hospital for nearly two months and will have several more rounds of chemotherapy in the coming weeks.

But unfortunately, chemotherapy alone will not be enough to treat the 41-year-old's Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

Emilia requires a stem cell transplant, and is raising awareness and encouraging people to register to be a stem cell donor to help her and others affected by blood cancer find their life-saving match.

"This definitely isn't just about me, in my bay in Worcester hospital, all three of us live within half a mile of each other, all with acute myeloid leukaemia. All of us need stem cell transplants so it really hit home that this isn't just about me," Emilia said.

"Getting on the register is so important. It's just 10 minutes of your time, but at some point you could be that match for someone."

Could you be the stem cell match Emilia, or people like her, are waiting for?

Meet Tom and Angela 👋 they're enjoying their dream careers as Diagnostic Radiographers thanks to Degree Apprenticeships!

Apprenticeships can play a vital role supporting staff into a career they've always wanted, while continuing to work at the same time.

Angela worked in our hospital for several years before applying for a Diagnostic Radiography Degree Apprenticeship with Exeter University, training while continuing in her role.

Tom joined our Radiography team as an assistant back in 2013 before taking the step to start the same degree apprenticeship in 2022.

Both Angela and Tom graduated last year as fully-qualified Diagnostic Radiographers and are thriving in their new roles.

Our apprenticeships can offer fully-funded courses including dedicated study time, giving staff the opportunity to gain new skills, progress their career, and learn while they work.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we're showcasing what can be achieved by apprentices like Angela and Tom.

All three of our hospitals received a top patient safety award for joint replacement surgery.

The National Joint Registry gave the Alexandra, Kidderminster and Worcestershire Royal hospitals its Gold Award, recognising the high standards of patient safety for joint replacement surgery on hips, knees, ankles, elbows and shoulders at our county’s hospitals.

The NJR checks data from joint replacement operations in hospitals across the country to improve clinical outcomes for patients.

Thousands of bowel cancer cases will be diagnosed or prevented earlier, thanks to more sensitive screening that's been trialled by our local team.

For over a year we've lowered the threshold for the home-screening kits to lead to a referral for further testing, and this will now be done nationally to help save more lives.

This means smaller amounts of blood in poo samples can be spotted - helping find signs of cancer earlier. It’s the same simple test, just better at picking things up even earlier!

Around 600 extra bowel cancers will be detected each year thanks to this change and our team is proud to be at the leading edge of this important, life-saving expansion.

The home-testing kit is offered to everyone over 50 and checks for blood in a small stool sample, which can be a sign of bowel cancer. Most people who use their kit won’t need further tests.

When your kit arrives, put it by the loo. Don’t put it off.

🎊 Two years ago today Ben married Arlaine in hospital after being given just days to live. But Ben surprised doctors with a miraculous recovery, and today they celebrate their second wedding anniversary! 💖

Ben was admitted to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in a critical condition, and when doctors discovered he had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, his last request was to marry his partner of 40 years, Arlaine 🤍

The ward team quickly arranged an emergency wedding and transformed the ward into a beautiful setting for the couple's ceremony.

Thanks to a series of treatment at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Ben made a remarkable recovery against all expectations, and today the happy couple are celebrating their second wedding anniversary together. 💐

Huge congratulations to Ben and Arlaine! 🎉
