2/3 in our Sciatica series - Can Sciatica be serious, and do I need a scan?

The good news is that most cases of sciatica are not serious and often improve with the right care, movement, and exercises. Imaging such as MRI scans is rarely required, as scan findings don’t always match symptoms and usually don’t change the treatment plan.

A thorough chiropractic assessment can accurately diagnose the cause of your symptoms using detailed orthopaedic and neurological testing.

However, urgent medical advice should be sought if you experience:
• Sudden weakness, pain or pins and needles in both legs
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Numbness around the saddle area
• Severe back pain with fever or unexplained weight loss

Did you know that 𝗪𝗘'𝗩𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗!?

We were thinking about keeping it a secret until the plaque arrives in February, but we're a bit too proud of the achievement!

Clinics across the country are invited to share their approach with the Royal College of Chiropractors. Those clinics that demonstrate the highest level of patient care receive the Patient Partnership Quality Mark (PPQM).

Whilst this award reflects the hard work of our incredible team, thanks also has to go to our fantastic patients, whose trust, confidence and support motivate us to keep improving.

First up in our Sciatica Series - what is Sciatica & What Causes It?

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that travels from the lower back or buttocks down the leg, sometimes reaching as far as the calf or foot. It may also cause symptoms such as pins and needles, burning sensations, numbness, or weakness in the leg or foot.

The most common cause of sciatica is a bulging disc in the lower back, which can irritate or compress the sciatic nerve. Other common causes include age-related spinal changes, muscle tightness in the hips and buttocks, pregnancy-related changes, or direct trauma such as a fall or sports injury.

Although sciatica can be very painful, it is rarely serious and most cases respond extremely well to conservative treatment, including chiropractic care.

If leg pain is stopping you from doing what you love, help is available. 💙

Strength Sunday! 💪🏻

Remember bands can be used to add support as well as resistance - their versatility is one of many reasons we love them!

Body weight exercises like tricep dips (that Beth is doing here) and pull ups can be super tough and feel almost un-achievable - bands are a fantastic way to bridge that gap!

What are you doing to stay strong this week?

We’re checking your reflexes!

Reflexes, more formally known as deep tendon reflexes, are automatic muscle responses that occur when a tendon is gently tapped. They provide valuable information about how well your nervous system is functioning and help us identify any potential concerns.

Reflex testing is one part of a comprehensive neurological examination, which may also include:

✅ Muscle strength testing
✅ Skin sensation
✅ Proprioception (your ability to sense where your body is in space without looking)
✅ Cranial nerve screening
✅ Coordination and balance testing

Together, this information helps us determine:
🟢 Whether your nerves are functioning normally
🟢 If not, where an issue may be coming from
🟢 Whether the problem is likely spinal in origin and something we can help manage
🟢 Or whether further investigation is needed, including referral to another healthcare professional such as a neurologist

We perform basic neurological screening on all new patients, with more detailed testing added when appropriate based on your symptoms and medical history. In most cases, everything is functioning exactly as it should.

If we ever do find something outside the expected range, we’ll explain it clearly, discuss next steps with you, and arrange any appropriate referrals. Your safety and overall health are always our priority.

A little bit of myth-busting today! People often believe that bending is bad for your back. But bending isn't the enemy!

Your spine is strong, adaptable, and designed to move; forward, backward, and everywhere in between. Avoiding movement can actually cause things to stiffen up over time, which will increase your risk of injury.

With the right guidance, bending and moving our bodies builds confidence, resilience, and a healthier spine. Keep moving. Your back was made for it!

If you want to build a healthier, more resilient spine, let us know - we can help with that!

If you want one small habit that can make a huge difference to how your body feels and functions - make it movement snacking!

Movement snacking means adding short, easy bursts of movement throughout your day. Just 5–10 minutes here and there can help:
✅ Reduce stiffness and tension
✅ Improve mood
✅ Boost focus and cognitive function

Examples:
✔️ A short walk at lunchtime
✔️ A quick set of bodyweight exercises
✔️ A few stretches while waiting for the kettle to boil ☕

Try adding movement snacks to your day — your body and mind will thank you! 🙌
