Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder in the UK - yet it is often misunderstood or overlooked.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is more common in neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with ADHD and autism, yet it is often misunderstood or missed.

Differences in emotional regulation, reward processing, impulsivity, interoception (awareness of hunger and fullness), and sensory processing can increase vulnerability to binge eating behaviours. For many, binge eating functions as a coping or self-regulation strategy, not a lack of willpower.

Shame and stigma can then reinforce the cycle.

The good news?

Binge Eating Disorder can be treatable, and you do not need a formal diagnosis to seek support. Early, evidence-based intervention can reduce binge frequency, improve emotional regulation, and support long-term recovery outcomes.

Mental health shows up at the dinner table, too.

Binge eating disorder (BED) and mental illness have a strong link between them, and as we are focussing on BED during this year’s Eating Disorder Awareness Week, we wanted to highlight the importance of being mindful that mental health issues can play a big role in living with BED.

Binge eating episodes can create feelings of shame and loss of control in the person which can result in deepening depressive symptoms such as low mood and feeling hopeless.

Research shows that treating Binge eating disorder should address both behaviour and emotions and it is not effective to just focus on eating habits and weight loss, but to also provide strategies that help address mental health also.

"What is Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a recognised eating disorder characterised by recurrent binge episodes, a sense of loss of control, and significant psychological distress.
