If someone had a fit in your care home, would you know what to do?
It’s important to stay calm and act quickly. Ensure their safety by moving any objects nearby that could cause injury and gently place them on their side to help keep their airway clear.
Do not try to restrain their movements or put anything in their mouth. Time the fit; if it lasts longer than five minutes, or if another fit begins immediately after the first, call 999 right away.
Stay with the person throughout, offering reassurance once the fit stops, and check for any injuries. Once they regain consciousness, keep them comfortable and monitor their condition until they are fully recovered.
It’s also important to record the incident according to your care home’s protocols. For further training and up-to-date first aid guidance, consider
