Today is a reminder of the importance of prevention, public health, and tackling health inequalities for all.

Understanding Piles (Haemorrhoids)

Piles are swollen blood vessels inside or around your bottom (a**s). They’re common and often improve on their own after a few days. Symptoms can include bright red bleeding after a bowel movement, itching or soreness, a feeling of not fully emptying, mucus discharge, or lumps around the a**s.

You can help ease or prevent symptoms by:
• Eating plenty of fibre and drinking fluids to keep stools soft
• Avoiding straining on the toilet
• Using damp toilet paper gently
• Taking warm baths and exercising regularly

Many pharmacies can suggest creams or treatments to relieve discomfort. See a GP if your symptoms don’t improve, keep coming back, or if you notice changes that worry you. Seek urgent care if there’s heavy, nonstop bleeding or severe pain.

Understanding Menopause
Menopause is a natural stage when periods stop as hormone levels change, usually between ages 45 and 55. Before periods end, you may go through perimenopause, where symptoms can begin and vary from person to person.

Common symptoms include:
• Hot flushes and night sweats
• Mood changes, anxiety or low mood
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Irregular periods or changes in bleeding
• Sleep problems and palpitations
• Vaginal dryness and reduced s*x drive

Everyone’s experience is different, and symptoms can last months or years. Lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, exercise, and good sleep routines may help. Treatments, including hormone therapy, are also available—speak to your GP, nurse, or pharmacist for advice and support.

Protect Against HPV-Related Cancers – HPV Vaccination

The HPV vaccine is offered to boys and girls in Year 8 (ages 12–13) to protect against high-risk HPV strains that can cause cancer.

Key points:
HPV is linked to over 90% of cervical cancers in England and can be prevented with vaccination and regular screening.
The vaccine also helps protect against head, neck, and pe**le cancers.
HPV is a very common virus; while usually cleared by the body, high-risk strains can lead to cancer.
The vaccine protects against 9 high-risk HPV strains, including those that cause cervical cancer.

Introduced in 2008, the NHS HPV programme has dramatically reduced HPV infections and cervical cancer rates, with an 84% reduction in cervical cancers among women vaccinated at ages 12–13.

If you missed your HPV vaccine at school, you can still be vaccinated up to your 25th birthday. Contact your GP to book an appointment.
