Yesterday saw the versatility of the Sutherland Chapel as we catered for a funeral at full capacity.

Once the service was finished the back half of the chapel was cleared, the curtains pulled and extra catering space made available to make the afternoon more comfortable for all mourners present.

The curtains work both ways as they allow families with smaller numbers to have a more intimate service in a cosier space.

Faces change, we’ve all got a bit older, but still providing the top level of care since the doors opened at South Farm Road in 2004.

Today marks 22 years since Ian and Sue took a leap of faith and went out on their own.

We’ve achieved so much in those years, and it wouldn’t be possible without the trust families put in our hands at the toughest time of their life.

We are so thankful for the support we have been given over this time from our local community, and look forward to the next 22 years looking after you and your loved ones ❤️

From Ian and Sam, a massive thank you must go to the staff that work so hard for us making sure our level of care is unrivalled, and giving the families we look after a personal unique funeral every time.

This is because today is a special day at IHFS. We bid farewell to Lee Bird who retires after 14 years at our company.

A loyal, hard working funeral operative with a very dry sense of humour. We wish him the very best as he beckons on a much more important job, being a Grandad!

Don’t worry though, once he’s worked through the list of jobs at home, we hope for Lee to become one of our casual bearers, and we are sure he will be popping in whenever he passes the office.

We will miss you Lee!🏌🏼‍♂️

“It’s not going to be a normal funeral, my daughter loves rock music!”

These were the opening words of Heather, whose daughter Karen sadly passed away last month.

Prior to meeting Karen’s family we had a conversation regarding coffin options and they were going towards the wicker basket.

It was only when Karen’s collection of Iron Maiden t-shirts (35 of them!) came up, that Sam suggested a bespoke reflections coffin and put in a design request. Within 20 minutes, an email came back and the family were blown away.

From here Nathan was able to design a unique service sheet to tie in with the Iron Maiden themed service.

For us funerals should be as unique as the person they are celebrating, and we will always strive to provide this❤️

A small update on this service now offered by Worthing Crematorium.

The times available have been extended, offering 4:30pm and 5pm as well as the early mornings.

As direct cremations become more frequent in our profession, we felt we wanted to bridge the gap between an unattended direct cremation and a full funeral service.

With the help of Worthing Crematorium, we are now able to offer families a chance to say a simple goodbye with a 15-minute appointment in the chapel of their choice. During this time, the family are able to listen to 2 pieces of music before leaving the chapel.

Our fantastic charity golf day is back for 2026, and you could be a part of it!

Taking place at Hill Barn Golf Club on Thursday 11th June 2026.

Bacon roll and hot drink on arrival
18 holes of golf (shotgun start)

Today’s celebration of life at The June Sutherland Chapel was as unique as the person it was held for.

The gentleman was a keen artist, therefore the family were able to have all of his artwork on show during the service and afterwards in the catering suite.

On leaving the chapel mourners were given a painting each, meaning his legacy lives on for those who loved him ❤️

Last week Funeral Director Jane Keeley had a positive meeting with a volunteer from sibling support.

As a charity they offer support for siblings when they lose a loved one, helping them navigate a difficult time.

When someone takes out a funeral plan they can add in their own choices, making their funeral service personal to their requests.

For the funeral we undertook yesterday the request of a singer was included in the funeral plan, which came as a surprise to the family!

We had the brilliant Alexis - Vocal soloist join us at Worthing Crematorium to complete the wishes of the person whose life was celebrated.

Community and local sport has always been at the heart of all we do, so we are thrilled to have sponsored the Worthing Rugby Club under 16’s.

It was great to have the team down at the June Sutherland Chapel in East Preston yesterday for a squad photo.

Following on from our post this week about direct cremations it feels right to elaborate.

Of course we would always recommend a service at a local crematorium or our service chapels located in Broadwater and East Preston but we understand there is a place for direct cremations as they become more frequently selected.

Whilst some national companies advertise they provide the UK’s number 1 funeral plan and using them saves your family fees for not needing to pay for a funeral director, doing this takes away the personal touch you get from a local independent funeral director.

When you use IHFS you are looked after by our team of staff caring for your loved one from the first initial call to the day of the funeral.

We meet and talk about the requirements for the funeral service, often in person allowing you to put a face to the name of who is looking after you.

Your loved one travels in a hearse to a crematorium of your choice, at a date and time of your choice.
