St Barnabas House

St Barnabas House St Barnabas is a charity providing specialist palliative care within the hospice and the community.

St Barnabas House is the hospice for the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. Our care extends well beyond the hospice walls, with nurses visiting patients and families at home. While others might need to stay at the hospice to get help with complex symptoms. For those dealing with the impact of a recent diagnosis, there are opportunities to meet others who are on a similar journey. They can take part in a range of activities from relaxation and exercise classes to gardening, art, cooking, and talking groups - helping them to live well for longer. And, when the time comes, St Barnabas is there at the end of people’s lives so they can die with dignity in a warm and caring environment. It's thanks to the generosity of the local community that all of this is possible. It costs nearly £10 million every year to provide hospice care for local people, with only 22% of this coming from government funding. You can show your support by fundraising, volunteering, taking part in a challenge event, playing the St Barnabas House lottery, or leaving a gift in your Will.

“Why I’m here for you.”

Terry works on our inpatient unit, where our specialist teams care for people nearing the end of their lives. For our winter appeal, she shares her motivations for working in the hospice and what she loves about her role.

“Before I started working at St Barnabas House, I supported two good friends as they came to the end of their lives.

"One of those friends was a nurse herself and a few days before she died, she said to me: ‘Little sister, you should come and work here at St Barnabas and help people who are going through the same thing I’m facing now.’ Two or three years later, I started work here...I am here to listen to [families]. If they want someone to keep them company, I am here to hold their hand.”

"Volunteering as a Community Companion gives me a wonderful sense of satisfaction. It's almost like a continuation of my working life, but on a more friendly basis. You feel you are really getting to know somebody." - Liz

This week, volunteers nationwide have been celebrating Befriending Week. At St Barnabas House, our Community Companions initiative matches patients with a volunteer who offers befriending and companionship to patients in their home. Two of our longest-serving Community Companions are married couple Liz and John. They have kindly shared their experiences and told us what they have learned in a new blog:

Marc is a patient and long-term supporter of our sister hospice, Martlets. He and Stuart share a determination to ensure hospice care is available to Sussex families for many more years to come.

This winter, we are having to make some difficult decisions. Hospices nationwide are facing a funding crisis, and St Barnabas House is not immune. Every year it costs more than £10 million to provide our care services. This figure has gone up as bills have risen, and it’s far more than we receive in government funding.

We’re asking for your support now, so we can keep on caring for local families.

With your help, we can continue to support families across Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield - families like Marc’s.

Read more at www.stbh.org.uk/will-you-be-here-for-us-this-winter and find out why Marc is determined to keep local hospices caring.

We’re here for you. Will you be here for us?

The National Audit Office (NAO) has released a report on the financial sustainability of England’s adult hospices.

It highlights a growing and deeply concerning funding gap between public donations and government funding. This is increasing each year and pushing more hospices into financial difficulty.

We’re calling for this to change and are doing everything we can to make sure St Barnabas House and our sister adult hospice Martlets Hospice are here in years to come – but we can’t keep on running at a loss.

We were pleased to welcome Dr Tim Fooks – High Sheriff of West Sussex – to St Barnabas House this week!

He met with our CEO Stuart Palma for a tour, seeing the purpose-built facilities and saying hello to staff.

As High Sheriff, he is committed to celebrating all those who volunteer, work and support our communities. And as a retired GP himself, he understands the challenges facing hospices across the county.

He said: “Hospice care is about dignity, choice, and comfort. It’s about giving people more good days, not just managing their final ones. But unless action is taken now, we risk losing the very services that make that possible.”

Dr Fooks worked with hospice leaders earlier this month on an article raising awareness of the challenges facing hospices. You can read more at:
