🌿 Recovering from a Total Knee Replacement? Let’s talk about two muscles that don’t get enough attention! 🌿

When you think of knee recovery, most people focus on the quads and hamstrings — but two smaller muscles behind the knee often play a big role in how well you move and feel: the plantaris and popliteus.

🦵 The popliteus (often called the “key to the knee”) helps unlock your knee so you can bend it smoothly. After surgery, it can tighten up or become overworked, making movement feel restricted.

🌱 The plantaris may be small, but it connects the knee to the calf and can cause pulling or stiffness if it’s not moving freely.

That’s where clinical massage comes in.
Through focused, gentle work, massage can:
✅ Ease post-surgery tightness
✅ Improve circulation and tissue recovery
✅ Help restore smooth, comfortable movement

If you’re on the road to recovery after TKR, remember — healing isn’t just about the big muscles. Sometimes it’s the little ones that make the biggest difference 💪

🛹 Why the Skateboard Exercise Works After Knee Replacement

(with Clinical & Sports Massage Integration)

The skateboard exercise is a gentle, low-friction movement that helps restore knee mobility after replacement surgery. When combined with clinical or sports massage, it supports faster, more comfortable recovery.

👍 Restores Motion: Sliding promotes safe flexion and extension while clinical massage keeps surrounding muscles and fascia supple.

👍 Reduces Pain & Tension: The exercise relaxes tight quads and hamstrings; sports massage further eases muscle guarding and improves comfort.

👍 Boosts Circulation: Repetitive motion and manual massage both enhance blood flow and lymphatic drainage, reducing swelling.

👍 Improves Control: Together, these techniques retrain movement patterns and coordination around the new joint.

👍 Supports All Rehab Stages: Begin gently while seated; as mobility improves, progress to more active movement, using massage to maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness.

Tip: Always follow guidance from your physiotherapist or massage therapist for best results.

Your every step, every time you lift your heel, each muscle squeeze pushes the blood from the lower leg back to your heart. This keeps your blood circulating and your heart alive. ❤️

Sitting, inactivity, our sedentary lifestyles is literally killing us. In addition we lose muscle mass as we age. 😕

Reduction in blood circulation increases our risk for clots, blood pressure issues which can cause swelling, particularly around the ankles and your risk of heart related issues increases.

BUT this is so easy to prevent….. MOVE more! Daily walking. Heel raises when sitting, for example watching TV or sat at your desk. Walk up the stairs. Standing heel raises when you boil the kettle!

My motto, prevention is better than cure! Get moving. 🚶🏃💃🏻🕺🏻😊

This move is a gentle cupping of the lumbar erectors a bit of QL and lots of fascia. Great lower back mobilising technique. Good for releasing tension here or higher up in the mid/upper thoracic!
