In our latest podcast episode, for eating disorders awareness week, Ali shares her eating disorder recovery story.

Sharing this week’s episode for eating disorders awareness week feels especially tender and important, as Ali opens up about her past experience of living with an eating disorder and what recovery has meant for her relationships with herself and others. We’ve approached this conversation with care, avoiding numbers, diets or graphic details, and focusing instead on shame, self-compassion, community, and the possibility of healing so it’s as safe and recovery-oriented as possible.

If you listen, please take care of yourself and step away if it doesn’t feel right today – and if you’re struggling, you can find support via in the UK

Less than a week to go and a few tickets still available. Learn about anxiety, how it impacts you, what maintains it, and what can be done to help.

This 45 minute webinar will help you understand your brain & body when you or a loved one are feeling anxious & how to overcome the feelings

07/02/2023

In the absence of information, the brain goes negative. When you hesitate to share what’s on your mind with your partner, you are not making it easier on them. Quite the opposite - you are allowing their mind to race with every negative possibility it can come up with.

Conflict avoidance benefits neither one of you. Be transparent and immediately speak up when something bothers you.

Fear of fear is a huge contributor to anxiety disorders.

Nobody wants to feel anxious, it’s not a great feeling, in fact it can feel pretty awful when really intense. The symptoms can feel similar to those described of a heart attack or fainting.

So of course you don't want to feel it. However, the problem comes when you are doing everything you can to NOT feel anxiety. You start to avoid situations, carry things that you hope will prevent it and pick up all the techniques you read to get rid of it.

You start to become preoccupied with NOT feeling anxiety and maybe even subconsciously scanning your body for potential symptoms.

Once a sign of anxiety is detected, the Uh Oh! signal goes off and sure enough there’s the fear - anxiety is now there in full force.

Now you are in full panic mode because the very thing you DO NOT want to feel is there even though you did everything in your power avoid it.

So, what do I do? You may ask.

Become willing to experience the symptoms of anxiety. I’m not asking or expecting you to like it, but to become more comfortable with the discomfort of it.

Teach your brain that although unpleasant, the symptoms themselves aren’t dangerous.

Name it and acknowledge it whilst continuing to do things that add to your life.

CBT and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can help you with this.
