Safety doesn't require self-abandonment

Over time, healing usually involves learning things like:

“I can have needs too.”

“Conflict doesn’t always mean danger.”

“Someone else’s emotions aren’t my responsibility to manage.”

That’s the retraining layer.

It involves:
boundaries
self-trust
relational repair
sometimes therapy or coaching

Calming the nervous system doesn’t automatically change appeasement patterns, but it gives us the regulation and awareness we need to start making different choices in relationships.

Fawn: the tension between an outward appearance of extreme, helpful, or people-pleasing behavior and an inward state of fear, anxiety, or dissociation.

The fawn response is a survival mechanism to avoid conflict or danger by becoming "small," invisible, or perfectly agreeable.

Ever say “yes” when you really want to say “no”? Over-apologize? Hide your feelings? That’s fawn.

Fawn = keeping others happy to feel safe.

- Agreeing when you don’t want to
- Avoiding conflict
- Apologising automatically
- Shrinking your needs

It usually develops when, as a child, safety = approval.

Interrupt fawning with a pause:

- “Let me check and get back to you.”
- “I hear you. Here’s what I need.”
- “I’m allowed to take up space.”

Micro-pauses retrain your nervous system to respect your needs.

🧊 Freeze Mode: When Your Body Hits Pause

Freeze happens when the threat is too overwhelming to fight or flee, so your body shuts down to survive, conserving energy, numbing sensations, and preparing you to endure until safety returns.

Everyday “Freeze” Triggers

•Making an appointment or a phone call that feels intimidating

•Starting a gym routine or new health habit

•Changing jobs or taking on a new responsibility

•Having a confronting conversation with a colleague, partner, or friend

•Tackling financial tasks, paperwork, or deadlines

Even though these aren’t physically dangerous, your nervous system reacts as if they are, because they involve uncertainty, potential judgment, or perceived risk.

What the body does

•You may feel stuck, procrastinate, or put it off endlessly

•Your mind may go blank or feel foggy
You may feel numb, heavy, or disconnected

•Motivation and action feel nearly impossible

Freeze is not laziness, avoidance, or lack of willpower. It’s your nervous system saying:
“This is too much right now... I need to protect myself before I can act.”

Freeze looks like:

•Mind blanking

•Feeling physically heavy

•Wanting to act but stuck

•Doing everything else except the main task

•Even binge-eating, tidying, or watching TV can be sneaky freeze in disguise; your nervous system keeping you “safe.”

This is sometimes called “playing dead” in humans, like animals do to avoid further harm.

Tip:

Break freeze with micro-movements.

For example: Getting to the gym

-Step one, get your gym gear on... nothing more,

-Step two, Water bottle filled, no pressure

-Step three, Step outside

-Step four, let the mind know you can just turn up to the gym and see how you feel. Just 2 minutes etc...

If you can't move beyond a step. Try again another time and attempt to get to the next step. Celebrate every step acheived.

Tiny steps bypass overwhelm. Motivation comes after regulation.
