I remember this feeling... You're excited to start weaning but also very nervous! I actually attended a Mini First Aid class with Beckie so I was prepared and could go into weaning with confidence! Here's some tips to help you...
🍓 Do your research - traditional weaning or baby-led weaning, both have their benefits and one style may suit you and your baby more than the other. Read up about them both and see which appeals most to you.
🥕 Finger foods should be the length of your finger - when introducing finger foods, your own finger is the perfect size for your little one to be able to grasp.
🥦Cook things thoroughly (no al dente for weaning) and soon your baby will able to manage chunkier, harder foods.
👶🏻 Embrace the mess! - weaning can be very messy but it’s also a great learning experience for your little one. Embrace the mess and enjoy watching your little one experiment (use microfibre/reusable cloths to clean up as they’re much better for the environment than baby wipes).
😀 As parents, we need to remember to smile, and have happy faces whilst weaning our little ones so they don’t pick up on our anxieties when feeding. (It’s okay to be freaking out a little on the inside!)
🚑 Know the difference between gagging and choking - gagging is very common (and very normal!) when beginning weaning as a baby’s gag reflex is very sensitive. Generally gagging is noisy and your baby will often go red before managing to spit out or swallow the food. Choking on the other hand is less common and is silent, with baby turning blue quite quickly. Knowing when to act and what to do is so important, so if you don’t know how to help a choking baby, make sure to attend a First Aid class, just in case.
