The Birth Preparation Company Midwife-led Antenatal courses, Caesarean courses and IBCLC lactation services in Wymondham, Norfolk

Such a great day at the Baby & Toddler Fair today 🤍

I loved introducing my small business to so many expectant parents, seeing some of my previous clients with their babies (and some recent ones still with their bumps!), and catching up with some fantastic local businesses, such as:with.amber
norfolk.doula

norwich

Especially lovely meeting my neighbour for the day Rachel Mirow – doula , and catching up with my wonderful former MLBU colleague Zoe Harvey .medical.aesthetics (and very interesting try of her Tesla chair 😅).

If you've discovered my page today and are expecting a baby locally, welcome! I run popular midwife-led antenatal courses for Norfolk parents-to-be, who want evidence-based preparation and the knowledge to make informed decisions for their birth and early parenting journey.

This week's free newborn group was another busy one 🤍

There was plenty of chatting, cuddles, cups of tea, and some breastfeeding support along the way.

Those early weeks can feel intense, and having a relaxed space to ask questions, share experiences and connect with other new parents can make a huge difference.

I always feel so lucky watching these little communities form 🤍

Many partners quietly worry they won’t know how to help during labour.

They imagine they’ll need to “manage” things — or fix problems — when in reality their role is often much simpler and more powerful than that.

Understanding what labour normally looks like, how birth physiology works, and how to support the environment around labour can make an enormous difference.

Many partners often tell me they feel much clearer about their role after my antenatal courses.

Feel free to share this with your birth partner and make sure to visit my website to view my upcoming antenatal courses and secure your space!

Here’s what 12 hours of proper birth preparation looks like:
• 12 hours of in-depth preparation (4 x 3-hour sessions)
• Midwife-led and evidence-based
• Clear, evidence based information to help you make informed decisions
• Deep dive into labour physiology, birth choices & feeding
• Practical preparation for the early days with your baby
• Space for real questions (no fluff, no awkward games)
My aim isn’t to overwhelm you with buzzwords — it’s to make sure you leave feeling calm, informed and genuinely prepared.
April course is now booking for June/July due dates.

Watching another group of parents finish their antenatal course this week reminded me why I care so much about this work.

They arrived with questions, uncertainty and (very understandably) a sense of overwhelm.

They left feeling informed, calmer and genuinely confident about birth — and about caring for their baby afterwards.

Good birth preparation doesn’t promise a “perfect” birth.

But it should help you understand what’s happening, what your options are, and how to navigate labour, birth and early parenthood with confidence.

If you’re expecting a baby this spring or summer and would like to join a friendly, balanced and evidence-based antenatal course led by an experienced NHS midwife, my next course begins soon (see the website for dates and availability).

If it feels like the right time to prepare properly, I would love to support you 🤍

Reading reviews like this never gets old! 🤍

Seeing couples grow in knowledge and confidence over the weeks is the best part of what I do.

Birth works best when both of you feel informed, steady and supported — and that’s exactly what these classes are designed for.

Norfolk parents-to-be, I’ve got you 🤍

Labour doesn’t always follow a straight, predictable path in the way that textbooks and clinical guidelines suggest.

Research and the lived experience of many birth attendants indicate that “physiological plateaus” are natural, temporary pauses or slowdowns in labour that can occur at different stages and often resolve spontaneously without intervention.

These pauses are sometimes interpreted as labour dystocia (failure to progress), but they may actually represent normal self-regulation between parent and baby.

Recognising this is important.

Sometimes what’s needed isn’t intervention — but rest, nourishment, hydration and protection of the birth environment.

Understanding the range of normal doesn’t replace clinical assessment.

It helps you approach labour with more context, calm and confidence.

One of the biggest drivers of fear in labour is not knowing what’s normal.

Many moments that look dramatic — or feel worrying — are actually common physiological responses.

That doesn’t mean concerns should be ignored.
It means understanding context matters.

Preparation isn’t about controlling birth. It’s about recognising what might be normal, knowing when to seek support, and feeling confident navigating both.

We cover all of these (and a lot more!) in my antenatal courses! 🤍

If you’re a partner reading this and quietly wondering what you’re actually meant to do during labour — you’re not alone.

Many partners worry about getting it wrong, not knowing enough, feeling helpless or feeling like a ‘spare part’. One of the biggest misconceptions about birth support is that partners need to constantly do something. In reality, some of the most powerful support in labour means being still and holding space.

Birth partners don’t need to manage labour — and they certainly don’t need to “fix” it.

Labour is a physiological process. The role of support is to protect the environment around it. That might mean staying calm when things feel intense, helping maintain privacy, or simply offering steady reassurance.

Many partners tell me that before starting my antenatal course they had no real idea what they were meant to be doing — but once they understood the physiology of birth and the importance of their role, everything started to make much more sense.

This is something we explore in depth during my antenatal courses - you can find out the upcoming dates on my website www.thebirthpreparationcompany.co.uk

One of the biggest surprises for many first-time parents is learning that labour doesn’t always progress in neat, predictable patterns.

While guidelines and timelines exist to support safe care across large populations, they can't always reflect the unique way each individual labour unfolds.

Human bodies don’t all work to the same schedule - and variation can still sit well within the range of normal.

Understanding this during pregnancy can help you feel more prepared for the kinds of conversations and decisions that sometimes arise during labour.

Preparation isn’t about controlling birth — it’s about feeling informed, supported and confident - whatever direction things take.

This is something we explore in more depth during my antenatal courses - because understanding what is within the range of normal can make a real difference to how confident you feel heading into birth 🤍

The Birth Preparation Company - Midwife led antenatal classes & baby massage

Hello, we are Andrea and Jo, two friends who met whilst studying midwifery at the University of East Anglia. After initially working together in a hospital, Jo now works as a community midwife providing all aspects of midwifery care including antenatal and postnatal clinics, home visits and home births, whilst Andrea remains within a hospital setting where she works in all areas of the maternity department, including the Midwife led birthing unit (MLBU), delivery suite, antenatal clinic, both antenatal and postnatal wards, as well as attending home births. Together, we have had the privilege to support countless women and their partners through their pregnancies, labours and births, as well as providing advice and support through the postnatal period.

Our birth preparation classes have been born out of our frustration of frequently meeting couples whose labour, birth and early days with their new baby did not match their expectations, despite having attended antenatal classes. We believe that women have a much better chance of having a positive birth experience if they are prepared for all eventualities, because when it comes to childbirth, things don’t always go to plan. Therefore, we have decided to create birth preparation classes which would offer honest, relevant and up to date information straight from the horse's mouth - no filter, no fluff!

We offer you birth preparation classes with a difference. Run by experienced practising midwives, our courses are relaxed, open, honest and non-judgmental and include everything you need to know for your labour, birth and early days with your baby.

Classes are small enough to allow interaction and space for asking questions, but large enough to enable you to meet other parents with babies due at similar times, giving you the opportunity to create a support network and potentially friends for the years to come.
