It’s more than just a heavy period…
March is endometriosis awareness month. Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition affecting 1 in 10 women, where tissue found within the uterus grows outside on other organs. It thickens and bleeds through the menstrual cycle but has no way of exiting the body, therefore causing scarring, inflammation and pain.
The average diagnosis time is 10 years. The only way of diagnosis is having a laparoscopy with a biopsy to detect and remove tissue. The removed tissue can return within 6 weeks of operating. There is no current cure.
After fighting for diagnosis for 12 years, I was officially diagnosed with endometriosis in April 2024. It is something I discuss often because we still live in a world where discussing female health can be see as an awkward topic. It’s something I discuss often because it affects me and women like myself every single day.
It is so so so important to talk if you are struggling with symptoms, regardless of whether you have been diagnosed or not. It’s a tough path, but we’re in it together.
My body may not be perfect, but it is strong enough to battle what has been thrown at it so far, and we continue to work on making it stronger - regardless of the setbacks! 💪🏼🎗️
