🐣HAPPY EASTER 🐣

A lovely gift from one of my clients who has lost an amazing 20kg. She has been consistent with her changes, not perfect, as life can sometimes get in the way.

She has made small realistic changes which have been gradually built on over the weeks and months and she committed to the process. Other positive changes have happened along the way such as improved energy levels, better sleep and improved gut health.

🎄Managing IBS over the Christmas period can be challenging due to the large amounts of food and changes in routine. Here are five tips to help manage IBS during this time:

➡️Plan Ahead: Be aware of your trigger foods and plan your meals accordingly. If attending get togethers consider bringing your own IBS friendly foods to ensure there are options that won’t upset your stomach.

➡️Eat Mindfully: It’s easy to overeat during the holidays, but this can lead to discomfort. Try to eat slowly, chew thoroughly, and listen to your body’s signals of fullness to avoid overindulgence and feeling bloated.

➡️Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is important, especially if you are consuming alcohol or caffeinated beverages, which can be triggers for IBS.

➡️Manage Stress: It can be a stressful time, and stress can exacerbate IBS symptoms. Engage in activities that help you relax, like deep breathing, yoga, or taking a walk.

➡️Maintain Your Routine: As much as possible, try to stick to your regular routine, including meal times and exercise. This can help keep your digestive system on track.

Remember, it’s important to enjoy the festive season while taking care of your health. If you want to get on top of your symptoms, then get in touch.

🥝Did you know that those kiwi’s sitting in your fruit bowl may actually be really helpful if you are experiencing constipation?

➡️Benefits
🥝They increase intestinal water retention and colonic volume, resulting in increased stool frequency and softer stools. PMID: 33767108

🥝It's a great low FODMAP Option: Kiwi is considered a low-FODMAP fruit, making it suitable for individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who are following a low-FODMAP diet. Sometimes people may experience constipation as a side effect of the low FODMAP diet incorporating low-FODMAP fruits like kiwi may help alleviate this issue.

🥝Kiwi is rich in dietary fibre, with both soluble and insoluble fibre

🥝Kiwi has a high water content, and adequate hydration is essential for softening and moving stool through the digestive tract.

How much should I take?
One serve of kiwifruit (either 2 small green or 2 small gold kiwifruit) per day

Kiwi is a safe, effective and low cost intervention, comment below if you have had any benefits from including them in your diet👇

Although IBS is often talked about as a standalone condition, it's essentially an umbrella term of different symptoms.

There are several presentations of IBS. These subtypes include IBS-C, IBS-D and IBS-M, Each one is referred to after a certain set of gastrointestinal problems.

IBS-C: If you suffer from IBS-C, you may have fewer bowel movements than usual and may strain to go. Stomach cramps and belching
can all be symptoms of IBS-C, along with gas and bloating.

IBS-D: With IBS-D, more than a quarter of stools on your abnormal bowel movement days are loose, while less than a quarter are hard and lumpy. If you have ISB-D, you may feel like you need to go to the toilet more frequently.

IBS-M can result in a variety of symptoms. You may find that your symptoms alternate between causing constipation and diarrhoea.

Different forms of IBS can cause a wide range of symptoms; identifying the type you have is an important step to getting effective treatment.

A registered dietician can help you make sense of your symptoms and focus in on the best course of treatment.

Ladies, do you notice a shift in your IBS symptoms during your menstrual cycle? Share your experiences below 👇

It's no secret that our IBS symptoms can go from bad to worse during the time of the month. But why?

Oestrogen and Progesterone are some of the main hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. These s*x hormones don't just affect your mood- they can also cause havoc with your digestive system!

The levels of these reproductive hormones fluctuate dramatically each month. During your period, the levels of Oestrogen and Progesterone are at their lowest, which is when IBS symptoms tend to worsen.

Although much more research is needed to determine the specific mechanisms underlying IBS and the menstrual cycle, a dietitian can help you to navigate your symptoms and help you identify triggers.

Help, I think I have IBS. How do I get diagnosed?

It is important not to self-diagnose. If you think you have IBS then speak to your doctor as it is important to rule out other conditions such as:
👉coeliac disease
👉inflammatory bowel disease
👉endometriosis.

Your doctor may want to ask about symptoms you are experiencing and investigate further if you are having any of the following symptoms (Red flags), which may indicate something other than IBS. These are:

🔹Unexplained weight loss
🔹Persistent daily diarrhoea
🔹Nocturnal bowel movements
🔹Persistent daily vomiting
🔹A family history of bowel diseases e.g. bowel cancer or Inflammatory bowel disease
🔹Age of >50 onset
🔹Rectal bleeding/anaemia
🔹Fever

There are no specific tests for IBS diagnosis despite many tests claiming to diagnose it.

If no red flag symptoms are identified and the other conditions are ruled out then IBS can be diagnosed

Can Your Gut Influence Your Skin Health?

Skin diseases result from a complex interaction between genetic susceptibility, lifestyle, and the immune system.

Not only is the skin microbiome altered, but many skin diseases are accompanied by an altered gut microbiome.

Altered Gut Microbiome is Associated with some Common Skin Conditions:
•Acne
•Psoriasis
•Rosacea
•Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis
•Seborrheic Dermatitis

Possible mechanisms that the gut may influence the skin:
👉Anti-inflammatory effects
👉Intestinal permeability
👉Neurotransmitter effects

Try to make positive dietary changes such as:
✅Minimising highly processed foods
💦Drinking plenty of water
🥑Consuming a varied diet with good quality protein, plenty of vegetables and fruits, which are high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
🐟Ensure you are getting adequate Omega-3s

🙌🏻When you improve a clients pain at the same time as their IBS🙌🏻

This is why I adopt a holistic approach to my assessments, not just focusing on diet alone. Your body is all one system so it is important to consider other factors in their medical history or lifestyle that might impact.

It’s not about just putting a temporary plaster on people’s symptoms or prescribing medication all the time, but REALLY trying to improve the root cause of their issues!

👉Get in touch if you would like to improve your symptoms.
