🎁 Talking Thirsk with Chris Purser - Bearing Gifts

We have just received parcels sent from a relative of my partner’s, sent from a well known grocers to the upper crust. Three of them came, containing a sturdy wicker hamper with a promise of “cheese and biscuits”.

We were bemused, when the biscuits were there, with a small jar of “Fig Cheese”, some sort of chutney.

By a later delivery, two more stout boxes appeared.

They contained wrapped in a wool blanket, (which we used to stuff a cushion!) several frozen ice-packs, and a small box of “British Brie Cheese”, the other one, identically packed, revealed a tiny log of Goat’s Cheese, just small enough to fit into a top outside pocket…

📰 The Thirsk Weekly News Part of a TV Christmas Special

On Thursday night 18th December our sister title “The Thirsk Weekly News” made it’s TV debut on the opening scenes of Channel 5’s “Christmas with the Greens: A Yorkshire Vet Special”.

I am sure it will be on again over Christmas and available on demand.

Jeannie Green and her husband Steve (star draws of the Yorkshire Vet series) bring back the Christmas Spirit to Vet Peter Wright via a number of people around Thirsk.

My wife Fiona spotted many people she knew from the Thirsk area, an easy hour’s entertaining watch.

The reason the paper was part of the programme was that a member of the Production team at Daisy Becks Studios (Leeds) contacted ourselves to see if they could use our paper to set the scene for this special…

💦 Yorkshire Water Hosepipe Restrictions Lifted

Temporary hosepipe restrictions across Yorkshire, introduced on 11 July following the driest spring in 132 years and a record-breaking warm summer, were lifted 10 December.

Reservoir levels are now 91.6%, and Hull aquifer levels are at 77%. This means that available water resources across reservoirs, rivers, and groundwater sources are above average for this time of year (85.1%), and restrictions can safely be lifted.

Ending the restrictions follows 14 weeks of sustained increases to reservoir levels, which had dropped to 30.6% at their lowest point.

Without the company’s drought management plan, the grid system which moves water around the region and customers’ water saving actions, it is estimated that reservoirs could have dropped to as low as 17.6%…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Parkrun Double Milestone Weekend for Craig

In the build up to Christmas, many Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers have been focused on maintaining their parkrun streaks.

None more so than Phillip Craig who has some awesome parkrun statistics for both running and volunteering.

On 13 December, he hit two big milestones - his 200th parkrun and 350th time volunteering at parkrun!

Phillip has been a very dedicated volunteer at Northallerton parkrun over the years, frequently supporting both parkrun on Saturday and then Junior parkrun on Sunday, whilst also squeezing in his own running.

To make this milestone align, he started planning about six weeks ago to ensure that he could have a double milestone weekend.

On Saturday, he helped with the set up of the Northallerton course and then ran the new 5k course in Northallerton - now on its second week with plenty of positive feedback pouring in…

⚽️ Thirsk Falcons Match Report from Facebook

**Thirsk Falcons U9 Clarets vs Catterick Garrison Blues**

What a game!

Today the Clarets showed incredible effort, teamwork, and resilience in a really competitive match against Catterick Garrison Blues.

First Half: The boys came out strong, taking control early and playing some fantastic football. Their passing and movement were brilliant to watch!

Second Half: The opposition stepped up their intensity, but our lads kept battling and showed great character. Yes, a few mistakes happened - but that’s all part of learning. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow…

Kevin Hollinrake, Member of Parliament for Thirsk and Malton is urging residents across York and North Yorkshire to back their local businesses this Small Business Saturday (December 6th), warning that local traders are facing a “perfect storm” of new government burdens.

Kevin visited several businesses in Malton including Derek Fox Butchers to discuss the impact that recent Budget has had on their business.
