⚽️ Match Report from the Thirsk Falcons from Facebook

**Under 9 Girls**

February started as January ended for Falcons u9 girls with a home game down at the Sports Village.

Copmanthorpe were the visitors today and they definitely woke up and started the game the stronger opening a couple of goal lead, but the girls did what they do best and keep running, tackling, dribbling and soon they were on the scoreboard.

By halftime the scores were all level and the game could have gone either way.

Illness to one of the girls meant a quick shift around, but the positives about all the girls playing different positions each game means that the unplanned substitution went virtually unnoticed…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Mulligan Takes Win in Newcastle

On 7 February, club coach, Liv Mulligan was racing in the Newcastle 10km Winter Warmer Run. Despite having taken various wins over the last few weeks in the 5km parkrun distance, this was Liv’s first 10km race for a while.

She continued her excellent form and took home the prize for first female in 40:51 as well as second overall.

There were also lots of Harriers out parkrunning at the weekend with Rosie Gatenby and Alex Miller trying out the new York Community Woodland which was on its second week.

It was very busy, with over 600 runners turning out aiming to collect the letter “Y” for their parkrun alphabet challenges.

Rosie and Alex were excited to see parkrun royalty Eileen Jones, who has written two books about parkrunning, and pleased they arrived early to get parked and enjoy the atmosphere…

🌾 Our best farmland is for food not for solar

I’m launching a campaign for food not solar. Here’s why:

If we want Britain to lead in the industries of the future, from artificial intelligence to the data centres powering our digital lives, we must face the reality that we need more electricity.

As a nation, we are rightfully ambitious. We want high-skilled jobs, a booming economy and lower bills for families. To get there, we need a grid capable of meeting demand that will only grow.

Solar power can have a role to play. It is quick to deploy and can provide useful supplementary capacity.

But in our rush to build, we risk a catastrophic strategic error by allowing developers to take the path of least resistance, carpeting our countryside in glass and metal at the expense of one of our most fundamental resources, the land that feeds us.

That is why I am imminently launching a campaign to stop solar farm development on Best and Most Versatile agricultural land…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Harriers Secure Saltburn Prizes

The last day of January saw 31 Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers turn out for various parkruns across the country.

This was a particularly meaningful run out at Fountains Abbey for three Harriers, Marc Davies, Bev Davies and Paul Adams, who were running in remembrance of a recently departed friend and colleague Pete Hills.

Pete was a respected Senior Bridge Engineer in North Yorkshire who lived in Ripon and enjoyed running, so it was a fitting way to keep his spirit alive for friends and family to gather to run and share memories.

Sunday 1st February was then an incredibly busy and successful race day for Harriers across North Yorkshire.

In the longest race of the day, Esther Harrison and Joe Martlew were running the Saltburn Trail Marathon, which is the first race of the Hardmoors 26.2 annual series.

For once, the weather forecast surprised on the upside, with sleet and winds having been predicted, the runners were happy to see some balmy January weather…
