In response to the announcement that we are applying to close our Copmanthorpe branch, we have put together answers to some of the most common concerns. Thank you for all the positive comments, regarding the service you have received over the years from Front Street Surgery. We do hope you will stay registered with ourselves and access our consolidated services from our Acomb branch. As you are aware we were recently inspected by the CQC as a “Good” practice, that offers OUTSTANDING patient care.

1. Will I need to register at another practice?
No, we invite all our patients who are registered at our Copmanthorpe branch to remain registered with Front Street Surgery and access our service in Acomb.

2. If I want to remain a patient of Front Street Surgery, do I need to register at the Acomb branch?
No all pts registered with us will remain registered with Front Street Surgery. You do not need to take any action.

3. There is limited parking in Acomb, where will we park?
We are looking to see if it is possible to extend our disabled car parking spaces at the Acomb branch.
Morrisons car park is close by (less than 200 yards). This is a large car park, and parking is currently free, so we feel lucky to have this facility. There is also street parking nearby.

4. What if I need a home visit?
We will still offer home visits, as we do currently. Copmanthorpe will remain in our catchment area.

5. Will there be enough appointments in Acomb for the Copmanthorpe patients too, or will there be a longer wait for an appointment?
We don’t foresee any change to our waiting times. We will have the same number of clinicians running the same number of clinics, all carried out from Acomb.

6. It is a lot easier to get an appointment in Copmanthorpe than it is in Acomb.
All our appointments are booked 2 weeks ahead, regardless of their location. We send booking links to patients who can select the GP they wish to see at a time and date of their choosing.

7. Will you have enough rooms at Acomb, for the extra clinics?
We have just created one new clinical room in the Acomb practice and we are looking into the possibility of creating further clinical rooms. We will be applying for a capital grant to support this. The Acomb landlord supports this in principle.

8. What about our prescription requests?
• We encourage all patients to download the NHS app; this is a really efficient and safe way to order repeat and acute medication. It is a very useful resource. You can set this up yourself without the need to visit the practice. We will be setting up some drop-in sessions to support patients with this.
• We also have a dedicated prescription email, which is monitored daily.
• You can register for online services and then order your repeat medication through a link on our website (you do need to come in with 2 forms of ID to set this up).
• We are liaising with Tracey at the pharmacy in Copmanthorpe with a view to having a prescription drop off point inside the chemist, which we would empty throughout the week.

9. There is no direct bus service - what if I don’t drive?
We really do hope that the majority of our patients registered at Copmanthorpe will want to stay patients of Front Street Surgery. We understand the transport is a big concern. We are in discussion with the ICB and our charitable partner; York Wheels, to see if there is the possibility to fund a pre-bookable service between Copmanthorpe and Acomb.

10. I find the Copmanthorpe surgery nicer surroundings and I like the fact it is a smaller informal branch!
We understand how you feel. However, the building needs significant improvements to bring it up to the standards required for a modern practice. We have recently redecorated our waiting area some of our clinical rooms at Acomb. We also have a new area where patients can take their blood pressure and weight.

11. Copmanthorpe is busy and there is a new housing estate, so it will get busier.
We are aware of the new housing estates being built in Copmanthorpe. Old School Medical Practice has recently extended its practice and created additional clinical rooms, with this potential increase of patients specifically in mind. We have been in touch with them, and they are aware of our application to close our branch and have contingency in place.

12. Will there be any job losses?
Thank you for asking this question, but no there will not. All our existing team will continue to work from our Acomb branch.

Application to Close the Copmanthorpe Branch of Front Street Surgery.

The lease of our Copmanthorpe branch expires in September. We have engaged in discussions with our landlord, supported by the ICB, however we have been unable to come to a mutual agreement.

It has not been an easy decision, but we will be submitting an application to close our Copmanthorpe branch.

We know this news will be disappointing, but we welcome all our patients to continue to access our consolidated services from our main branch, in Acomb. We will still offer home visits in the area, when required.

There is a patient survey on our website regarding this proposed closure, which is open until the end of April.

We will also be hosting a drop-in session (date to be confirmed). We will then advise you of the date, once a venue and date have been confirmed.

A statement from Dr Orr ...........

After 30 years at Front Street Surgery, it now feels the time is right to retire. It has been a pleasure and a privilege being your GP and I very much cherish the relationships we have developed over the years.

Despite the constant changes and challenges in the NHS, Front Street Surgery has always adapted and flourished and will continue to do so.

I wish all of you; patients and staff alike, all the very best for the future
........................................................................................................................................

Information for patients:
There is a message book at both sites, if you would like to leave a retirement message for Dr Orr.

A few people have asked regarding a collection; if you would like to contribute to a retirement gift, there will be a collection at the Acomb branch.

Cases of invasive meningococcal disease have been confirmed in Kent. Sadly, 2 people are known to have died. It's important to know the signs of symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. Get more info from NHS.

It’s that time of year again when mini eggs are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that, just like grapes, they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

With whole grapes we advise cutting them in half lengthways and ideally into quarters to create thin strips. But chopping up mini eggs isn’t as easy. So, what can you do?

1. Hide them from the children and eat them yourself – good luck with that!

2. Break them into small pieces with a rolling pin. Or, crush them in a pestle and mortar. Or melt them a little first.

3. Opt for a different treat. Larger, hollow eggs are much safer for little ones.

For more practical tips and advice to keep children safe from choking take a look at our guide: https://capt.org.uk/resources/choking-fact-sheet/
