Fulford Community Orchard

Fulford Community Orchard Fulford Community Orchard is the last corner of the orchard belonging to the Hospital which stood on the site of what is now the Designer Outlet Centre.

There are some sixty trees, most of which date from the 1930s but some of which have been planted recently to replace earlier losses. The trees are heritage breeds of pear, apple and plum. The site, about two acres in size, is now a wildlife habitat. Its maintainance and upkeep are now provided by the Friends of Fulford Community Orchard, a charity.

Most of the eating apples are now gone. They went over a couple of days. I hope this means a lot of people collected some for personal use and not a few that took a lot for other reasons. If you do want a lot of apples please get in touch via messenger so we can facilitate fair sharing for the local community. Incidentally a lot of the eating apples were picked before they were ready.

Unfortunately someone thought it was a good idea to move the picnic benches and used them as steps to pick fruit. One was broken. Volunteers refurbished the benches and placed them for the use of our Community. Whilst collecting some fruit for personal use is welcomed in moderation it is a shame someone decided to move the benches break one of them and not even have the courtesy to replace them where they came from.

Some of the plums are ripe. Mostly one called Czar an early plum. The picture on the left shows them before and the picture on the right shows a ripe blue plum with blue bloom. The test for ripeness is they also give very slightly when gently pressed and come off easily. Some on the ground are also good. If you want to pick some for your own use please do it's a community orchard. And be careful because wasps also know when they are ripe too😊. Many are out of reach but please don't pull the branches or shake them as they are easily damaged.
