A big shout out to all the fabulous, strong, independent women in my life.

If I’m honest, for a long time I always felt a bit more comfortable around men. I think it’s because I’ve never really been very good at being a stereotypical woman. I’m more rucksack, trainers and mud than handbags, heels and makeup.

For years I felt uncomfortable assuming other women were judging me for my poor fashion sense and inability to apply eye liner.

But over the last couple of years something has changed. I’ve started collecting the most badass women as friends, and it turns out the problem wasn’t women… it was just my own insecurity.

Now, for the first time in my life, I’m surrounded by strong, supportive, hilarious women who let me be exactly who I am.

You know who you are. I love you all. Thank you for inspiring me, pushing me, and proving that girls really are the best.

Shame it only took me this long to realise

Mindset: Put Another Layer On

What stood out most in Iceland wasn’t the weather.

It was the calm response to it.

No drama about the cold.
Just: “Put another layer on.”

Rehab needs that energy.

Instead of:
“Why is this taking so long?”
“This shouldn’t hurt.”
“I’ll never get back.”

Try:
“This is part of the process.”
“My body is adapting.”
“I’ll adjust and keep going.”

Rehab rarely needs extremes.

It needs consistency.
Patience.
The basics done well.

Layer up. Keep going.

Light: Progress You Don’t Always See

The Northern Lights don’t appear on demand.

You wait.
You stand in the cold.
You look up.

And suddenly - there they are.

Rehab is often like that.

Day to day, progress can feel invisible.

But zoom out and you’ll notice:
• A little less pain
• A little more strength
• More confidence
• Better tolerance

The light was coming.
It just needed time.

🌌 What small win have you overlooked recently?

Ice: Recovery Is Not Being Lazy

You can’t snowmobile all day without rest.

And you can’t sit in a hot pool forever either.

Recovery isn’t weakness.
It’s what allows adaptation to happen.

Recovery looks like:
• Sleep
• Rest days
• Lower stress
• Good nutrition
• Gentle movement

If you’re always pushing…
your body never gets the chance to rebuild.

Growth happens when fire and ice work together.

❄️ Where could you add a little more recovery this week?

Fire: The Stress That Makes You Stronger

Glaciers aren’t dramatic by accident.
They’re shaped by pressure and time.

Your body works the same way.

Muscles, tendons and joints need load to adapt.

That might look like:
• Strength work
• Increasing walking distance
• Gradually returning to running
• Working into manageable discomfort

Avoiding all stress doesn’t protect you.

Appropriate stress builds resilience.

If everything feels comfortable all the time…
you might not be giving your body enough fire.

🔥 Are you challenging your body enough to help it adapt?

Fire. Ice. And light.

Last week my family and I were in Iceland -
snowmobiles across glaciers, freezing air, and then soaking in hot pools while snow fell around us. Standing in the dark watching the Northern Lights ripple across the sky.

We had the most magical time.

And it struck me how much this mirrors recovery.

Fire - Stress that makes you stronger.
Ice - Recovery that allows growth.
Light - Progress that isn’t always visible… until suddenly it is.

Rehab isn’t about extremes.
It’s about balance.

This week ask yourself:

Do I need more fire (challenge)?
Or more ice (recovery)?

Your body thrives on both.

Waking up stiff or achy?

That “rusty” feeling in the morning is usually your body warming up after hours of stillness, not damage.

I’ve written a new blog on why it happens and what really helps.

Why Your Body Feels Stiffer in the Morning.
Link below or in the comments.

Gentle movement + warmth go a long way and are a great place to start, but for more guidance take a look at the full blog.

Take care, Helen

Today is Valentine’s Day, a day for love.

But don’t forget the most important love of all: the love you give yourself and your body.

If your body feels stiff, sore, or frustrating right now, it’s easy to get critical:
“I’m broken.”
“It’s letting me down.”

Here’s a gentle reminder: what you tell yourself matters.

“My body is asking for support.”
“I’m learning what I can do safely.”
“Progress is still possible, just differently.”

So today, show your body some kindness:
❤️ Thank it for all that it can do
❤️ Move it gently
❤️ Speak to it like you would someone you care about

Even on the hard days, your body is still on your side.

Skiing with knee arthritis? Don’t hang up your skis just yet.

I’ve just written a new blog sharing how people with arthritic knees can still enjoy the slopes, without painful flare-ups or worrying if your knee will hold up.

After seeing a couple of patients come back from ski trips amazed at how well their knees coped (one skied better than in 20 years!), I wanted to pass the same tips on to you.

From strengthening and equipment to technique and pacing, it’s all about protecting your knees so you can ski with confidence.

Read the blog here: https://painfreestart.com/how-to-ski-with-arthritis-in-your-knees/

Don’t let an arthritic knee stop you doing what you love.

Enjoy the slopes.

This week Grace my eldest turned 17.
Watching my daughter learn to drive this week has been a good reminder.

New drivers don’t wait for confidence, they drive to build it.
And recovery works the same way.

At first it feels awkward. Guarded. Uncertain.
You’ll stall, hesitate, take a few wrong turns.

But that’s not failure, that’s your body learning.

So if you’re feeling unsure with movement right now, be kind to yourself.

And remember, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I'm here if you need.

Small steps, good guidance, and a calm approach go a long way.

Take care, Helen.

Padel. Pickleball. Tennis.
Which one is kindest to your joints?

In clinic, people ask me all the time:
“What’s easiest on my knees, back, and shoulders?”

Quick guide:

* Knee pain → Pickleball or padel
* Back pain → Padel
* Shoulder pain → Pickleball
* Best workout → Tennis

Padel and pickleball are booming because they’re social, fun, and surprisingly joint-friendly — especially if you’re returning to sport after pain or stiffness.

** I’ve shared exactly how they compare (and how to protect your joints) in my latest blog.

Read the full post here, link is also in the comments, enjoy: https://painfreestart.com/padel-vs-pickleball-vs-tennis-which-is-easiest-on-your-knees-back-and-shoulders/

Your body deserves sport that feels good.

If I can help you make that happen, get in touch.

Take care, Helen
