**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays meme relates to back templates pre and post exercise.

Back templates are an essential part of saddle fit, and if done correctly can provide information on how the horse’s back shape “may” have altered.

Whilst useful, it is important to consider the horses posture, the time of day that measurements are taken, the horse’s standing posture (square), pre/post exercise and head/neck position etc.

Image A (Top) with the pre and post exercise templates superimposed on each other, appears that the horse has “come up” or it’s back muscles “have got smaller”.

Image B is the same templates (as A) but corrected for a change in horse height.

Whilst useful, these complexities highlight the need for the ridden element of saddle fit, impossible to fit a saddle statically (in the stable and not ridden) or through the post!

What do you do when you arrive at your dog walk destination?
Out of the car, off the lead and running?

This is tempting and often perceived as the most exciting part of the walk for the dogs as we want to see them run and enjoy themselves, but would we get out of the car and immediately do 10 x 50 meter sprints with no warm up?

Especially with older dogs it is so important to let them warm up a bit, get the blood flowing to their joints and muscles before letting them run. It also manages your dog's arousal levels so reactive or anxious dogs are likely to cope better during the walk.

Why not try this ...
🚶‍♀️ Arrive at your walk
🐕 Put your dog on a lead and keep them on it for the first 10 minutes
🐾 If they usually go off the lead, let them off
🐕 Last 10 minutes pop them back on the lead and let them cool down and relax

Vet Kathryn has been sharing her tips and tricks for arthritis management with us so keep your eyes peeled all this week to get her handy hints 👍

5. Make their home environment safe.

It makes no sense for your dog to be having medications and physical therapies for arthritis only to be causing joint damage, injury and pain by slipping, falling and putting too much pressure through their joints at home.
I often see cases where simple changes in the dogs home life have made a big difference to how well their pain is controlled.
This quick survey only takes few minutes and can really help you to spot areas in your dogs environment that could be causing them an issue - https://bit.ly/2R3UScI

Definitely recommend one of these, your dog will thank you in later life for protecting their joints now! 🐶🐾

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

It is with regret but absolute support for our government that the NAVP announce that all members will be adhering to the most recent guidelines. Not only set out by our government but supported also by the RCVS and BVA.

The routine work of our vet practices has ceased and they are now only attending emergency calls. With this in mind, and given the nature of our work as Veterinary Physiotherapists, it is important to understand that although our work helps and supports many animals, we are not providing an emergency service.

We are asking all members to stop working immediately to keep themselves and their clients safe. Those working within veterinary practices will be governed by their individual rules, but it is assumed that these are in line with the new guidelines and in the best interests of their clients. The government are working hard to ensure that self employed workers have the support they need during this unprecedented time. Continue to review the HMRC and Government websites for updates.

If you are a client and have an animal currently undergoing treatment or have a programme in place, please talk to your therapist about how best to continue your work with your animal at home.
We thank you whole heartedly for your support. This is a harrowing time for our country, and for the World. We will get through this as an association and as a country, and we look forward to seeing all of our clients again when the time is right. Now is the time to act and follow the instruction of our government to save lives.
