Do you have a connection to a local business that could support the Tiny Lives Appeal? We’re looking for supporters in the York area to help distribute collection tins within the community.

Could your local pub, fish and chip shop, salon or newsagent host a collection tin? Perhaps you have a contact with a business that would be happy to help make a difference. Every tin helps raise funds to enhance the care and experience of families on the Neonatal Unit at York Hospital.

If you’re able to help or would like more information, please email hello@yshospitalscharity.org.

Our Tiny Lives Appeal has reached an incredible £50,000 — halfway to our £100,000 goal!

Thank you to all the incredible individuals, organisations and businesses who have contributed to this milestone.

Every pound is helping create a more comfortable, calming and family‑focused Neonatal Unit for the 375 babies who begin their lives here every year.

Term Awareness Month is our time to shine a light on the full term babies who need our help following birth.

Term babies make up a big portion of our admissions. We recognise this month because the emotional impact on parents can be profound.

By acknowledging these journeys, we ensure that every family, regardless of their baby’s gestational age, feels seen, supported, and understood.

There are several reasons a term baby may need to come to us such as;

- Respiratory Distress
- Infection & Sepsis
- Jaundice
- Hypoglycaemia
- Therapeutic Cooling

If you have had a term baby with us over the last few years we would love to hear how your little ones are doing now, and always we love a visit ❤️

Reading to your baby is such a good way to bond while in the neonatal unit!

This is why we provide each baby admitted to the ward with a book so parents can read to them.

Please feel free to bring any other books in to read to your little one ❤️

National Storytelling week 2nd - 8th February 📚

Reading to your baby when they are on the neonatal unit can be a great way to connect with them. They love hearing your voice and reading is good for you too! It can help you feel more relaxed and reduce stress.

What book do you like to read to your baby? 📖

We’re delighted to share that York Ghost Merchants have raised an incredible £13,479 for our Tiny Lives Appeal through their latest charity raffle. This fantastic donation will help us create a more comforting, family‑friendly Neonatal Unit at York Hospital.

The funds raised will help us provide the extra equipment and special touches that make a huge difference for babies and families spending time in the Neonatal Unit. These additions will help create a calmer, more welcoming space for some of the smallest and most vulnerable patients.

A huge thank you to The York Ghost Merchants and everyone who took part in the raffle!

York Hospital SCBU has a temporary new home on Ward 12 👶

This planned move means we can carry out an exciting transformation of York’s Special Care Baby Unit, without disturbing vital care to our tiniest patients.

When complete, the new SCBU will be a modern, state-of-the-art environment where babies can grow stronger and healthier, with improved facilities to better support parents during their baby’s stay.

Where to find SCBU's temporary home:
1️⃣ Go to junction 5 on the main corridor
2️⃣ Take the lift or stairs to the first floor
3️⃣ Head toward Ward 12

The refurbishment is expected to finish in summer 2026, when SCBU will return to its newly upgraded home 💙

If you're interested in supporting our new facility, visit the York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity website to find out more about the Tiny Lives Appeal ➡️ https://www.yshospitalscharity.org/support-us/tiny-lives-appeal

The York Neonatal Unit is pleased to announce that renovation work on the ward will begin next week.

During this time, the unit will be temporarily relocated within the hospital. For the next few months, we will be based on Ward 12, as the SCBU unit will be out of use while the work is carried out.

We would like to reassure all parents that this temporary move will not affect the care their babies receive. The refurbishment will bring significant improvements and greatly enhance the experience for families.

The new ward will offer larger bed spaces, allowing parents to stay overnight with their baby. There will also be a dedicated counselling room, new facilities including reclining chairs, and improved parent accommodation such as two double bedsits. In addition, the unit will feature an accessible lounge and kitchen area, along with new accessible shower and toilet facilities.

We are very excited about these improvements and look forward to welcoming families into the new ward.
