Today's Homily on Luke 13:10–17
Theme: “Set Free by the Power of Compassion”
In today’s Gospel, Jesus meets a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years. She could not stand up straight, and her condition made her invisible to many in society. But not to Jesus. He saw her, called her forward, laid His hands on her, and she was immediately set free.
This story reveals the heart of God’s compassion. While the synagogue leaders were more concerned about the law of the Sabbath, Jesus was concerned about the law of love. He reminds them — and us — that doing good, showing mercy, and restoring life is never against God’s law.
The woman’s healing is more than physical. Jesus gives her back her dignity and her place in the community. He shows that every act of mercy, no matter when or to whom it is done, glorifies God.
Like the woman, we all carry burdens — spiritual, emotional, or physical — that keep us “bent over.” Christ still calls us forward today, inviting us to stand tall again in faith. He wants to free us from whatever keeps us bowed down — fear, guilt, sin, or shame — so that we can praise God with an upright heart.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see those who are bent low by life’s burdens. Fill us with your compassion and give us the courage to bring healing and freedom wherever we go. Amen.
