Menstruation: Creating a New Family Narrative
A lot of us, males and females, grew up in a home where menstruation was either not mentioned or treated like a taboo.
Our children shouldn’t experience same. Let’s create a different narrative about periods.
Your home should be the first place your daughter learns to be period-positive. Even if you grew up with these myths, you now have the opportunity to shift the narrative.
Here’s how to start:
• Tell your daughter about periods early and often.
• Let her see periods as healthy, not dirty.
• Correct relatives or visitors when they reinforce shame.
• Model period positivity: don’t hide menstrual products or whisper like it’s a secret.
• Encourage your daughter to ask why and challenge things that don’t make sense.
Let it be known that in your house, menstruation is everyone’s business. Let it be known that you support girls and make sure they’re proud of who they are.
