I’m grateful and thankful to all who took their time to visit and liked my page. I do understand why lots will like to know why the name mafanam. . During a review of our research we realized that about 99% of children and youth with disabilities have become only the responsibility of their mothers/grandmothers. Therefore the name mafanam means “my mama cares” in Ewe a local language spoken in Ghana. Benjamin Amewornu in response to a personal family experience (not a disabled person but having a mother who cares) that resulted in the desire to influence long-term sustainable change in the disability sector. “Even if the community doesn’t care I know my mama cares!!”

Now our website is active (www.mafanam.org) and you can visit us for more information on our projects for children and youth with disabilities.

Before Mafanam gives out mobility devices to its target group, such specification must first come from physiotherapists therefore mafanam works closely with hospitals such as Korle-Bu Teaching hospital, Orthopedic Training Center (OTC) and Salvation Army and then assessment can be taken by Mak-D for the production. Now parent are been advised on the importance of appropriate mobility devices.

Mafanam don’t just give-out mobility devices because children and youth with disabilities in Ghana need aids but do have workable experiences from the very best company and foundation in Africa. Special thanks to Shona McDonald of SHONAQUIP (a mobility devices and seating services company) and Uhambo foundation in South Africa for her kind hospitality and support; allowing Benjamin to study the operations of her company and foundation; bring together all sectors involve, which gives “a will meaning life of belonging” to children and youth with disabilities in South Africa. Mafanam now is implementing such ideology, giving hope to children and youth with disability in Ghana, that hey! IT’S POSSIBLE!!

We will like to acknowledge those who sow the seed for the “Ghana Children Wheelchair Project” so that mafanam can now reap its fruit; Sander Van-Dooren of PUM Experts, Esther Blom of Movendi foundation, Linh Dinh, Vietske Coers, Asih and Marlous the group of graduates from the Delft University of Technology who came to Mak-D to kick-start the project and finally to all organizations and individuals who contributed towards this project, mafanam is grateful for your candid support and now children and youth in Ghana do have hope.
