We have been quite for too long! Our education series continues, and we're now zooming into sexually transmitted infections/diseases (STIs / STDs).
STIs are also known as Venereal Diseases (VD) or Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). This term refers to all diseases or infections that transmit from one person to another through sexual contact. Despite the term 'sexually transmitted infections/diseases', there are some STIs that can spread through physical contact of the infected tissues or fluids, from an infected mother to her unborn child or through the process of child –bearing and breastfeeding, and sharing of unsterilized drug needles.
Examples of STDs: Chlamydia, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea, Crabs (p***c lice), Ge***al warts, HIV and AIDS, Hepatitis B and Ge***al herpes – only to mention a few.

The most common means of HIV transmission is through unprotected sexual contact.
