This is going to be a year of good health and fruitfulness of the womb.

Luke 1:42: Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

May you hear this SOUND from Jan-Dec 2026

30/12/2025

As the year comes to an end, we came together as a team to celebrate our achievements with a dinner and recognition night. It was a meaningful occasion to appreciate and honor everyone for their hard work, dedication, and commitment throughout the year. The evening reflected the strength of our teamwork and the importance of celebrating our successes together. We are grateful for how far we’ve come and look forward to achieving even greater milestones in the coming year with continued grace and unity.

She looks at me and says:
“Midwife… I don’t like that drug.”
And I pause.
Because I’ve heard it too many times.
SP.
Sulfadoxine–Pyrimethamine.
The small tablets many pregnant women complain about.
But the same tablets that quietly protect lives.
Let me talk to you not as a lecturer.
But as a midwife who sees this every day.

Most women don’t refuse SP because they’re stubborn.
They refuse it because they’re scared.
“It makes me feel weak.”
“I vomited last time.”
“Someone said it can harm my baby.”

So let’s clear this gently.

Why SP is given in pregnancy
SP is not “just another drug.”
It protects pregnant women from malaria, which can cause:

Severe anaemia
Premature delivery
Low birth weight
Stillbirth
Malaria in pregnancy is often silent.
No warning.
No loud symptoms.
Just damage happening quietly.

The dosage matters
SP is taken after the first trimester, usually from 16 weeks onward.or after your first quickening.

One full dose = 3 tablets at once, taken at the clinic.
And it’s repeated at scheduled antenatal visits.( Which is a 4 week interval)

Why we insist on DOT (Direct Observation Therapy)
We don’t watch you take it because we don’t trust you.
We watch because:

Some people forget
Some don’t complete the dose
Some give it to someone else
DOT protects you and your baby..
About the side effects you fear
Yes, SP can cause:

Nausea
Dizziness
Mild vomiting
But here’s the truth many don’t hear:
These effects are usually temporary.
Malaria complications are not.

Who should NOT take SP
SP is not for everyone.

Women allergic to sulfa drugs

Women on cotrimoxazole (especially HIV-positive clients on prophylaxis)

And for these women, we take extra precautions and offer alternatives.

So please hear me as a midwife:

We are not forcing you.
We are protecting you.

Every tablet has a reason.
Every instruction has a story behind it.
Most of them come from lives we lost before we knew better.

🤍 Trust your health workers.
Ask questions.
Speak up.
But don’t ignore guidance meant to keep you and your baby safe.

Midwife with a difference.❣️
Because care is not just what we give it’s what we explain.

PS:
If you’re pregnant or know a woman who is, please save this, share it, or ask questions in the comments.
Sometimes, one clear explanation can save a life.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Most pregnant women are told to take folic acid.

But very few are told why it’s non-negotiable.

As a midwife, I need you to hear this clearly.

By the time you confirm your pregnancy,
your baby’s brain and spinal cord are already forming.

In the first few weeks.
Quietly. Rapidly. Permanently.

That’s where folic acid comes in.

There are mothers who did “everything right”…
but didn’t take folic acid early or consistently.

And the consequences?

Spina bifida.
Neural tube defects.
Conditions that could have been prevented with one daily tablet.

The standard dose for pregnant women is 5 mg daily.

Not sometimes.
Not when you remember.
Every. Single. Day.

Why?

Because folic acid:
• Supports proper brain and spinal cord development
• Reduces the risk of severe birth defects( such as spinal bifida)
• Protects your baby during the most critical stage of growth

Skipping it is not a small mistake.
It’s a risk no pregnancy should carry.

This isn’t about fear.
It’s about power.

Power through knowledge.
Power through consistency.
Power through one simple habit that changes outcomes.

The Midwife with a difference.

If you’re pregnant and reading this: Please take your folic acid seriously.

Your baby is counting on decisions you make before you can even see them.

Now tell me ..
If I am not pregnant, can I still take folic acid?
