Celebrating World Hearing Day 👂🏽🎧

In commemoration of World Hearing Day, the ENT Department of UCC Hospital took action to promote ear health among children under the theme: “From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing Care for Every Child.”

The team engaged the university community through a health talk on ATL FM, emphasizing the importance of early hearing care and timely intervention.

As part of the outreach, the team visited the University of Cape Coast Kindergarten to interact with the pupils and educate them on proper ear care. The children were advised to avoid inserting harmful objects such as pencils into their ears and to promptly inform their parents if they experience any hearing difficulties.

At UCC Hospital, we remain committed to safeguarding the health and future of every child in our community.

Communicating with Compassion: Breaking Bad News in Healthcare

At this week’s Clinical Presentation Meeting, Dr. Nana Esi Kwofie delivered an insightful presentation on “Breaking Bad News” — a vital communication skill in medical practice.

The session explored what constitutes bad news, why delivering it is often challenging, and the importance of doing so with empathy, clarity, and professionalism. Key frameworks such as the ABCDE approach and the SPIKES model were highlighted to guide healthcare professionals in preparing adequately, communicating compassionately, managing emotional reactions, and developing patient-centered care plans.

The presentation reinforced a powerful reminder: patients may forget the exact words spoken, but they will never forget how they were made to feel in their most vulnerable moments.

At UCC Hospital, we remain committed to strengthening both our clinical expertise and our compassionate care.

Clinical Presentation Highlights.

Our first Clinical Presentation for 2026 featured an enlightening discussion on “The Effects of Excessive and Premature Screen Time on Children’s Brain Development,” delivered by one of our distinguished House Officers, Dr. Joshua Kamal.

The presentation highlighted how early and excessive exposure to screens can affect children’s attention span, language development, social skills, emotional regulation, sleep patterns, and overall mental well-being. Practical strategies were also shared on how parents and caregivers can promote healthy screen habits and balance technology use with meaningful real-life interactions.

It was an engaging session that reinforced the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the cognitive and emotional development of children in this digital age.
