CONDITIONAL SUPERINTENDENCE BY PHARMACIST-OWNERS

A pharmacist who owns a pharmaceutical facility and is engaged in full-time employment in another institution may only be considered for approval as superintendent pharmacist of the owned facility subject to strict regulatory conditions.

Such consideration shall not derogate from the general rule that superintendent pharmacists must be physically available, professionally accountable, and effectively engaged in the day-to-day supervision of the pharmacy.

RE : CLINICAL PHARMACY PRACTICE EXPERIENCE STORY IN DIFFERENT AFRICAN COUNTRIES AS TOLD ON THE PLATFORM OF AFRICAN SOCIETY OF CLINICAL PHARMACISTS (ASOCLIP).

Learning From A Ghana Pharmacist Testimonial.

My name is Dr ( Pharm) Hellen Miibil Adok, clinical pharmacist with the cardiology department of Tamale Teaching Hospital, Northern Ghana.
I can only speak for my facility because pharmacy practice has evolved at different rates in different hospitals in Ghana.

Before the introduction of PharmD, pharmacists were not going to the hospital wards and when the first batch of PharmDs came to my hospital, they faced a lot of challenges.
Some of the physicians were telling them to go back to the pharmacy department because the ward wasn’t meant for them.
But my predecessors never gave up, they kept on pushing and we are still pushing.
However by God’s grace our fight has yielded a lot of results.
Most physicians now know the importance of a pharmacist on the ward.
Some specialists usually ask for the presence of a pharmacist before starting their ward rounds on major ward rounds day.
Personally i work with cardiologists and sometimes they give the diagnosis to the house officers and ask them to come to me for the treatment. If i am not available at the moment. But if i am available, after the diagnosis, i give the treatment plan before we move to the next patient.
When it comes to calculations of doses of medications, they won’t even attempt it knowing you ( the pharmacist) are with the team.
Everything concerning the calculation is left to the pharmacists to handle.
These are just some examples i can give.
But we didn’t get here by just watching, we got here by pushing and always making ourselves available.

AVAILABILITY is key and making sure you give the right information confidently is also important.
To talk about the numbers, we are seriously understaffed but we don’t use that as an excuse not to go to the ward, even if its just once a week.

In this struggle for better patient care, you will meet difficult physicians but you have to keep pushing and make them see and know your relevance in the total outcome of the patient care.

This is just the little i can add to the discussion ongoing.
