"Obesity Crisis: A man-made disaster and a pandemic of human wrongs" - Dr. Amos Laar

28/12/2015

I have been a Biomedical Scientist for quite a time now,
I have conversed with several midwives and nurses of which I know,
And countless other health professionals;
But none was able to tell me of any delivery that was as unique as that of my Saviour.
Maybe you can disprove me today.

A birth of one foretold thousands of years back by several prophets.
The birth of one that made kings of Herod's type furious, confused and to become psychologically and emotionally disabled.
The birth of my King;
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah,
The root of David.

Ooo! How I hear the voice of John the Baptist shouting in the desert -'prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His path, fill all valleys and lower all mountains;
For I am not worthy to even untie the straps of His sandals'.

O yeah! I am referring to the one I call Wonderful, Prince of Peace, Mighty God, Everlasting King, Emmanuel.
Yes! The one who heals the brokenhearted, proclaims liberty to captives, and carries the message of salvation.

That's my King.
I wonder why you don't know Him yet.
I can't fathom why you won't surrender your heart and life totally, completely and madly to Him.

He is capable, adorable, unimaginable, indivisible, incomprehensible and indisputable.
At the mention of His name every knee bends and every tongue confess His Lordship.
Can you imagine?
Even a baby in the womb could limp for joy.
Glory! Glory!! Glory!!!

As wisemen from the East,
As Shepherds receiving the good news of the Newborn King,
Let's go out there with harps and cymbals,
Musics and hymns,
Dissociating out our Frankincense, our Gold and Murr.
Rejoice with me in turning a new leaf in the Lord and putting on that white linen garment;
With a perpetual aim of keeping it as such.

For unto us a Son is given;
For unto us a Saviour is Born;
And glory has shone around.
????Wishing you a Fantastic Christmas.

NAHSAG JOINS TO CELEBRATE WORLD AIDS DAY (1ST DECEMBER, 2015)

It is noteworthy that today marks WORLD AIDS day, and the National Health Students' Association of Ghana (NAHSAG), future stakeholders of the health sector, join in the celebration with her formidable and united front to combat this deadly disease.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “GETTING TO ZERO” thus zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. It is a day for taking stock of the challenges that humanity have faced and is still facing because of HIV/AIDS, and for celebrating our successes in supporting the people affected by the pandemic. World AIDS Day is also a day when we make a firm commitment to sustain the achievements of the past decades, and do more and better to reach further for the eventual victory over HIV/AIDS.

We have lived with this pandemic for more than three decades. We have seen the high death toll, dislocation of many families, the reduced life spans in hard-hit countries, the increase in child mortality and the millions of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. We have also seen the pain suffered by people who are stigmatized and discriminated against because of their HIV-positive status, and hence excluded from accessing the support, care and treatment services they so desperately need.

HIV/AIDS as a global pandemic has brought immense devastation around the world. Statistically, 1.2 million people worldwide died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2014. By the end of 2014, an estimated 36.9 million people around the world were living with HIV according to UNAIDS.

Not only is HIV/AIDS an impediment to development but it renders affected individuals and their communities vulnerable. HIV/ AIDS is a health, social and economic problem that should be of concern to all and sundry.

Though incurable, several efforts have been made to find not lasting but sustaining solutions to this disheartening disease in the form of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) to lengthen the life of those who unfortunately have the disease and to give the requisite information that the average individual needs to obviate any acts that may result in acquiring HIV/AIDS. In addition, humanity has also worked hard to address the pandemic and find ways to ease this suffering.

The biomedical discoveries, the global efforts in making available unprecedented funds and the expansion of preventive, treatment, care and support services to millions affected by HIV/AIDS have improved the quality of life and stabilized the pandemic in many countries. Antiretroviral treatment is now available to all who need it.

Though prevention messages have been expanded to the level needed, however, people living with HIV are still discriminated against. Many governments have not yet put in place supportive policies for implementation of harm reduction programs for injecting drug users. There are many more tasks we need to do.
We hear of many encouraging scientific advances, for example, that properly administered antiretroviral treatment can effectively prevent HIV infection, and there is immediate hope of finding a therapy to eradicate HIV from an infected person’s body. We look forward to seeing a day full of hope and smiles on the faces of families and friends stigmatized by this deadly disease.

These achievements and progress must not be halted by economic uncertainty created by the financial crisis of our dear country. NAHSAG therefore, strongly calls on all organizations (local and international) to do all possible to fund global HIV programs to ensure the sustainability of the gains of the past decades, and intensify future efforts to stop the pandemic. NAHSAG fully supports the UNAIDS vision of achieving zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero discrimination by 2015. In view of this, our role as NAHSAG and stakeholders of the health sector is to combat the stigma and discrimination, and protect the rights and entitlement of people living with this incurable disease.

Each member of this renowned association today is being charged to be an advocate and ambassador in his/her pursuit as a way of contributing to making the commemoration of today’s HIV/AIDS day a success.
NAHSAG this day urges all potential health providers and health professionals to minimise the incidence of HIV/AIDS; as it is epochal and prudent for us to prevent rather than add to the rise in incidence.
It is in the light of this that NAHSAG will concur with Bill Clinton that, “we live in a completely interdependent world, which simply means we cannot escape from each other”. How we respond to AIDS depends, in part, on whether we understand this interdependence. It is not someone else’s problem. This is everybody’s problem”.

Let us hasten to add that still HIV is transmitted through blood and blood products; that
AIDS IS REAL; and hence BE WISE; BE SMART; ABSTAIN; AND PROTECT YOURSELF.

Long Live the Health Student!
Long Live NAHSAG!!
Long Live Ghana!!!

THANK YOU.

Preventive healthcare is a Key

My family too has been a victim of this dreadful disease;
A disesase I underestimated its chronicity;
I am with him because I love him;
Forgetting that marriage isn't just about a mere good feeling called love.

Yes! I do remember the day I went to de hospital;
The sight of those people kept my knees on the ground;
I could perceive the suffering they were experiencing...
The joint pain...back pain...the pricks and its pain...shortness of breath and the likes made them go insane;
I could sincerely tell that they didn't want to be there;
I was sad yet couldn't asked them the 'why?s' in mind;
"Had I known" I wish wasn't at last.

Selfish as I was, I thought of my interest alone and not that of my generations to come;
I refused to go through the necessary procedues;
Marriage is good...love is sweet...so did I thought.
I did enjoyed every bit of it until that unlucky child showed forth his head;
Now I find myself in hospitals..herbal centers..clinics and everywhere possible;
At dawn.. day and night.

How he feels trapped in his own body forever;
He has eternally been hurt so not to live a normal life;
He's stuck in his own blood;
His pain, I feel, yet can't cure him;
He feels all alone like in a misery of a deadly kiss;
He's surrounded with medications and yet he's not cured;
You may not know personal stories of love ones with this;
But babies are with it..adults are with this... the rich and poor are with this...black and whites are with this;
Am soo sick of this.

A deadly sin that's a deadly pain;
A forever thorn which never leaves you alone;
Pain won't go away;
Blood won't be refilled;
Tears fall deep;
But nobody hears his suffering;
All the pains, he go through alone;
He wishes...that someday, that cureful kiss will be granted unto him;
A cure to end his misery.

All of these, because of my ignorance;
I thought that was my best decision;
Not knowing that was my worst decision;
Does our skin colour makes you wonder?
Do you stop to help them out?
Just to show your kindness and meekness?
Now you know, if you didn't, because I'm telling you;
Make haste to my advice;
They need to be heard and cared for;
They are here on earth to stay with us;
Not just to show up today and disappear tomorrow;
Death needs not to take them away that easily;
Tell them you love them;
This is the gist I can dash you.

This disease isn't invisible;
Nor is it a secret;
Yes!!! its de sickle cell disease...
A disease that can render you unproductive;
Failure to know my sickling status has led me to write to you;
They need you to confide in them;

Sickle cell! Sickle cell!! Whooo!!!!!! Here we whoof at you chasing you away;
It's our turn to fight back;
And Knowing your sickling status!
Is a guide!!
To a successful and a healthy family!!!

Say No! to excuses in health, religion and in life.

07/11/2015

Excuses have grown roots in generations of recent times. Moments may come when you cannot make it for some activities or tasks but that should be genuine.

We fail to seek medical counsel, obey dietary recommendations, go for check ups and many others compromising our health with excuses. We neglect our exercise therapies though we know the implications; and champion the eat-late syndrome and the junk-food-all-the-way disorder.
You seem careless on the timings and doses for those anti-hypertensives, ARTs and anti-biotics. Not to talk of the many times you keep on with that self medication and the behind the counter prescription for that chronic ailment even though you know the adversities. You can name names.

Forget not however that "there is no 'I don't have time'. It's all about priorities. If you are for it, you will make time or else find an excuse. No matter how poor you are, you can seek medical consultation; you can get yourself screened at a less cost than being taken by surprise. There are healthy diets for you. There are therapeutic lifestyle for you that are soo affordable and reliable. Make them your style.

Though we are all invited guests to the Lords Dinner and 'blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the Kingdom of Heaven' (Lk 14:15), Jesus tells us that you will be truly blessed only by honouring this invitation without excuses (Lk 14:18-21,24). Desist from excuses expecially with your health, your spirituality and life in general.

Smile and Laugh: they are sources of joy.

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.” ~ Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.

The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness by by throwing a feel-good party in your brains. Smile and laughter are good stress relievers, they boost energy, relieve pain and strengthen the immune system.
