Alliance by Eagles: IOM Organises Two-Day Training on Risk Communication and Community Engagement for Mpox Response

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched a two-day training program on risk communication and community engagement for Mpox response, targeting Unit Heads and district officials from the Regional Health Directorate in Takoradi.

The training aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to effectively communicate and engage communities during the Mpox outbreak. Participants include the Regional Director, Deputy Directors of Public Health, Clinical Care, Administration, and selected Unit Heads, as well as district officials from STM, EKM, and Shama.

In her welcome address, Regional Director Dr. Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu (Mrs.) expressed delight in having regional participants and emphasized the importance of the training in enhancing their skills and knowledge in risk communication.

Day one of the training covered key topics, including:

- Risk Communication in Mpox Response: Developing and implementing effective risk communication strategies to inform and engage diverse audiences.
- Community Engagement: Building trust, reducing stigma, and empowering communities to take action against Mpox.
- Communication Strategies: Crafting effective messages and using appropriate channels to reach target audiences.
- Community Engagement Strategies: Developing plans to engage communities and promote Mpox response efforts.

Through interactive sessions and case studies, participants gained practical experience in managing risk communication and community engagement during Mpox outbreaks. The training emphasized the importance of timely and transparent communication in building trust and confidence with the public.

By enhancing the capacity of participants in risk communication and community engagement, the training contributes to a more effective Mpox response, ultimately reducing the impact of the outbreak on communities. The program will conclude with final sessions tomorrow.

President Mahama Inspects Ongoing Health Projects in Western Region

The President of the Republic, HE John Dramani Mahama, paid a visit to the Western Region to inspect ongoing health infrastructure projects. Accompanying him were the Minister for Health, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, and other dignitaries.

During his visit, President Mahama inspected the construction of a seven-story Teaching Hospital complex at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital. He commended the contractors for their work and expressed optimism that the project would be completed soon.

The President also visited the Apimayim project, assuring the people of the Western Region that the facility would be completed within the next 18 months. He emphasized that the project would significantly improve healthcare delivery in the region, providing access to quality medical care for the population.

President Mahama's visit demonstrates the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and improving health outcomes in the region. The completion of these projects will not only enhance healthcare services but also provide training opportunities for healthcare professionals, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more productive population.

WESTERN REGION LAUNCHES MPOX VACCINATION IN GHANA

The Western Region of Ghana marked a significant milestone today as vaccination against Mpox commenced, with the Ghana Health Service officially launching the phased Mpox vaccination campaign at the New Takoradi Health Centre. The region has received its 20,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine, targeting key populations including health workers directly involved with Mpox cases, close contacts of confirmed cases, and other identified vulnerable groups.

Welcoming dignitaries and guests, Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and partners for their support in controlling the Mpox outbreak in the region. Dr.Dr. Okoh-Owusu stressed the importance of stakeholder engagement in active surveillance, case management, and risk communication, alongside vaccination efforts.

The launch, officiated by Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea was attended by the World Health Orga, traditional leaders, other health partners, health managers, district directors, opinion leaders, media representatives, health workers, and community members. Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health, along with several health workers and attendees, was among the first to receive the vaccine.

Since recording its first case in May 2025, the Western Region has reported the highest number of cases in Ghana, with 299 confirmed cases and 2 deaths. The vaccination campaign is set to run for 14 to 21 days nationwide. The Western Region has, however, commenced its vaccination drive in earnest starting Saturday, 4th October at the Metropolis, and all identified hot spots

The Acting Director-General assured the public of the vaccine's safety and urged collective efforts to overcome the outbreak, stating, "through our collective efforts, we shall beat this too."

Notable attendees included Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea (Ag. DG, GHS), Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe (Dir. Public Health), Dr. Frank Lule (WHO Country Office Representative), Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu (Regional Director, Western Region), and various health officials and partners. The initiative reflects the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, WHO, CDC, UNICEF, PATH, JSI, Red Cross Society, CSOs, Ghana Education Service, media, community leaders, volunteers, and health workers.
