Western Region Breaks Ground on First ICU with GHS 3 Million Fundraiser
The Western Regional Minister, in partnership with the Ghana Health Service, launched an evening fundraiser to secure the construction and equipping of the region’s inaugural Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The campaign aims to raise three million Ghana cedis (GHS 3 million) to bridge the long‑standing gap in critical‑care services for residents.
In her welcome address, Acting Coordinating Director Ms. Rachel Ofosu‑Sarpong said the event was intended to raise funds and establish an ICU for the region, improving overall healthcare delivery.
Addressing the gathering, Regional Director Dr. (Med) Marion Okoh‑Owusu (Ph.D.) outlined the roadmap:
“First, we need space for the ICU, then the necessary equipment, followed by training staff to operate it. Only then can we safely admit patients and ensure every single one leaves with their needs fully met.”
She emphasized the holistic vision of the Ghana Health Service, noting that health care must span pregnancy, newborn care, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and elderly care.
“As a region, we have a big deficit when it comes to managing critically ill patients. Many need ICU support for breathing problems, accident trauma, maternal complications, and other emergencies,” she added.
The event highlighted challenges in the referral system, where transport and psychological readiness often delay care. “When a patient refuses referral, it becomes a challenge. That’s why this ICU is vital,” Dr. Okoh‑Owusu said.
Dr. Okoh‑Owusu urged attendees to “donate generously, dip your hands deep into your pockets, and write good checks for us.” The campaign received enthusiastic applause, with officials confident the target will be met before the night ends.
The successful establishment of the ICU is expected to cut mortality rates for critical cases and reinforce the region’s health infrastructure, supporting Ghana’s push toward Universal Health Coverage.
Regional Minister Hon. Joseph Nelson, addressing patrons, called on them to take ownership of their health and lead the effort to secure the ICU for the region ahead of government provision, reminding that “service to God is service to man".
The night concluded with contributions from individuals, corporate and religious groups, and digital payment options were provided for continued support.
