Patient with history of schizophrenia presents with this scalp lesion.
๐ŸปMaggots are the larvae of flies. Human infestation is called myiasis and occurs when flies lay new eggs on the skin or in wounds. Myiasis can be classified according to site of infestation. Cutaneous is the most common form but nasopharyngeal, ophthalmic, intestinal and urogenital infestations have been reported.
๐ŸปMyiasis may progress to more invasive as demonstrated in this severe case above. Some identified risk factors for infestation are helpless or debilitated person, bleeding or odours of decomposition present, summer season and neglect in nursing or personal care.
