FGM, another heart breaking testimonial by Sainey M. Ceesay.

Why Cut something off without any Health benefit in the first place? I can vividly remember the trauma and pain I went through the day I was Cut.

How my eyes were tied with a cloth. How they put me on the lap's of one of them and opened my legs. The pain that followed is just unforgettable.

They did not only Stop at Cutting me, I was also sealed. Years later, I got married without knowing that I was sealed. We found out because my husband could not find his way through.

I was then taken to the Ngan Sing Ba who used her two fingers to pe*****te through to remove the seal. I screamed to a point where I became weak and no longer had the energy to cry. She kept on digging through my private part until she heard to sound TUK, then she stopped and filled me with cotton. From the Ngan Sing Ba's house straight to my husband's house.

Unfortunately for me, my husband still couldn't pass some point because the unsealing was not properly done. I was later taken to Dr Kurang to operate on me. I can still remember my last words to Dr Kurang before he put me to sleep.

I was traumatized to a point where sleeping with my husband was never an option.

I was Cut and Sealed without my parents consent. They waited until my parents were not around then they stole me.

Female Ge***al Mutilation is the ritual removal of some or all of the external female ge***alia. It is estimated that worldwide 200 million women have undergone FGM, mostly in Africa.

Though most girls are cut before the age of five, it may be done anytime from a few days after birth , up to puberty and beyond.

The extend of the damage caused by these practices differs from partial or total removal of the cl****is (Type I), to removal of the inner l***a (Type II or excision) to removal of both inner and outer l***a and closure of the v***a, known as infibulation of pharaonic type FMG (Type III) In the last case only a small opening is left to pass urine and menstrual flow. The va**na later will have to be opened for in*******se, and further again for childbirth.

Risks and complications increase with the type of mutilation. Physical consequences are numerous; fatal bleeding, recurrent infections, difficult urination, chronic pain, development of fistulae, infertility and complications during childbirth.

FGM may have lasting effects on women and girls who undergo FGM. The psychological stress of the procedure may trigger behavioural disturbances in children, closely linked to loss of trust and confidence in caregivers. In the longer term, women may suffer feelings of anxiety and depression. Sexual dysfunction may also contribute to marital conflicts or divorce.

FGM survivor: I don't enjoy s*x 😢😢

- My name is Fatou Sallah, from Ebo Town. I underwent FGM when I was 18 years old.

- It was a traumatic moment. I spent 3 weeks in the bush and 4 weeks at the house of a traditional healer because my private part was swollen and painful.

- My family was happy that I underwent FGM, but I wasn't. It was done without my permission. I was forced.

- When I got married in 2015, it was very difficult and painful to have s*x with my husband. I can't remember ever experiencing s*xual pleasure during in*******se with my now ex-husband.

- In 2017, I moved to England, where I met a doctor and disclosed to him the difficulties I encounter during and after s*x.

- I underwent ge***al reconstruction, but still, I don't enjoy s*x.

- Please say NO to FGM!

Good morning, Gambia!

Three women, Nano Jawla, Kaddijatou Jallow, and Yassin Fatty of Bakadagi in Niani were yesterday fined D15,000 each after becoming the first women in the "New Gambia" to be convicted of female ge***al mutilation.

The trio, who stood before Magistrate Kanjura B Sambou in the Central River Region (CRR), were found guilty of cutting two girls, who were one year old and four months old.

Here is a chat we had with a resident of Bakadagi on the case:

WHAT'S ON-GAMBIA: How were the three women caught and dragged to court?
RESIDENT: Gamcotrap has a regional coordinator in the CRR, so the matter was reported to him and he alerted the police. The women were arrested on January 16, 2023.
WHAT'S ON-GAMBIA: What's their relationship to the children?
RESIDENT: Yassin Fatty is the elderly woman who cut the girls, while Nano Jawla and Kaddijatou Jallow are the mothers of the two girls.
WHAT'S ON-GAMBIA: So the girls were cut before the police arrived?
RESIDENT: It was eight girls that were brought to Yassin Fatty to perform FGM on them. While preparing to cut the third girl, the police officers arrived.
WHAT'S ON-GAMBIA: Why didn't they arrest the other mothers?
RESIDENT: They ran away with their children...
WHAT'S ON-GAMBIA: How was that possible?
RESIDENT: The police couldn't explain how they escaped with their children.
WHAT'S ON-GAMBIA: Did Yassin, Nano, and Kaddijatou pay the fine?
RESIDENT: I don't know. They were fined D15,000 each or in default, one year in prison at Janjangbureh.
