I had the honor of participating in the scientific meeting on Radiation Therapy in Sarcoma Management, held on February 13th in Sofia, at St. Sofia Hospital.
During the conference, I delivered a lecture entitled:
“Radiation Therapy in Sarcoma Management – Indications, Timing and Integration.”
The discussion focused on the evolving role of radiotherapy in sarcoma treatment, emphasizing optimal timing (pre-operative vs post-operative), multidisciplinary integration, and contemporary evidence guiding clinical decision-making.
International collaboration is essential in radiation oncology, particularly in the treatment of rare tumors such as sarcomas. By exchanging experience and expertise across countries, specialists can adopt the latest technologies and treatment strategies more rapidly, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Radiation therapy is one of the main pillars of modern cancer care. It is a highly precise treatment that uses targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. Thanks to advanced imaging and planning systems, today’s radiotherapy is significantly more accurate and safer than in the past.
In sarcomas, radiation therapy plays a key role either before surgery to shrink tumors, after surgery to reduce recurrence risk, or in selected cases as a definitive treatment when surgery is not feasible. Because these tumors are rare and complex, multidisciplinary collaboration is crucial.
Concerns about radiation therapy are understandable, but modern treatments are carefully planned and well-controlled. Most side effects today are mild and temporary, and serious complications are uncommon. Radiation therapy remains a safe and evidence-based component of comprehensive cancer care.
Sincere thanks to the organizers of “TOGETHER FIGHTING SARCOMA” and to Dr. Vassos for the kind invitation and the excellent scientific environment.
