I recently had one tooth extracted and two implants placed in my lower jaw by Professor Fourmouzis. With his decades of expertise, he performed the surgery efficiently and made me feel completely at ease.

I also had six fillings done by Dr. Anna, who worked carefully using a microscope and other specialized equipment.

Maritina at the front desk has always been warm, friendly, and patient.

Tooth loss and gum disease may be quietly influencing weight gain—new research suggests.

A study in the Journal of Periodontology found that individuals with fewer teeth, reduced chewing ability, and signs of periodontal disease were more likely to gain weight over a 4-year period. The connection isn’t just about appearance—it reflects changes in how the mouth functions and how the body responds.

When teeth are missing, chewing efficiency drops. People tend to shift toward softer, more processed foods that are easier to eat but often higher in calories and lower in fiber. Missing molars, in particular, reduce bite force, making it harder to properly break down food and subtly altering long-term dietary patterns.

Gum disease adds another layer. Chronic inflammation from periodontal infection can influence the body beyond the mouth, while sore or bleeding gums can make chewing uncomfortable—further encouraging softer, calorie-dense food choices. Even before teeth are lost, function may already be compromised.

Over time, these combined effects can impact nutrition and weight. Maintaining healthy gums and preserving or replacing teeth helps protect chewing function—and supports better overall health.

Your teeth are not designed to handle constant pressure.

Clenching and grinding (also called bruxism) can quietly overload your teeth every night—or even during the day without you noticing. Unlike normal chewing forces, these repeated excessive forces push the tooth beyond its natural limits.

Inside your mouth, each tooth is supported by a tiny shock-absorbing structure called the periodontal ligament. When pressure becomes too strong or too frequent, this ligament starts to stretch and widen. Over time, this reduces the stability of the tooth.

This is why some people notice: • Tooth mobility (feeling slightly loose)
• Sensitivity when biting
• Jaw soreness or fatigue
• Small cracks or flattened chewing surfaces

It’s not just a “tooth problem.” It’s a load problem.

If this stress continues, it can accelerate bone loss around the tooth and worsen existing gum disease—making long-term damage more likely if left unmanaged.

The important part: this process is often silent in the early stages.

What you can do:
• Get evaluated for bruxism if you wake up with jaw tightness or headaches
• Use a professionally made night guard to reduce force impact
• Manage stress triggers (a major contributor to clenching habits)
• Treat underlying bite issues if present

Early intervention can prevent long-term damage.

Your teeth are strong—but they are not indestructible under constant pressure.

A clinical trial published in the European Heart Journal found that treating severe gum disease may do more than protect your teeth—it may help slow changes in blood vessels linked to heart attacks and strokes.

Researchers followed patients for 2 years and observed that intensive gum treatment reduced inflammation, limited bacteria entering the bloodstream, and slowed the thickening of the carotid arteries—the major vessels supplying blood to the brain. Even small reductions in this thickness are associated with meaningful improvements in cardiovascular risk.

This doesn’t mean dental treatment replaces heart care. But it highlights something critical:
your oral health is closely connected to your overall health.
Untreated gum disease may quietly contribute to long-term damage beyond the mouth.

This was a randomized clinical trial—one of the strongest forms of medical evidence.

A new study from Hiroshima University highlights a surprising link between oral health and heart rhythm. The gum-disease bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) can enter the bloodstream and infiltrate heart tissue, promoting fibrosis that distorts cardiac structure, disrupts electrical signals, and increases the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

In experiments, mice exposed to P. gingivalis had higher rates of inducible AFib, while human atrial tissue from AFib patients showed correlations between bacterial presence and severe gum disease.

These findings underscore the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and managing periodontitis not only for healthy gums and teeth but also as a potential safeguard against broader cardiovascular complications.
