🚨 Influenza season has begun across the WHO European Region—earlier than usual
This year’s influenza season has started around four weeks earlier than average across the WHO European Region. However, timing varies by country, and early rises in flu activity are not unusual, resembling patterns seen in the 2022/23 season.
At the same time as flu, COVID-19, RSV and other respiratory viruses continue to circulate, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance as we head into winter.
🔎 What we’re seeing so far
WHO monitors respiratory viruses year-round through the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), a network of more than 170 laboratories worldwide. Beginning each October, countries increase reporting to help determine when the flu season has officially begun and how it’s progressing.
As of mid-November 2025, influenza test positivity in primary care is around 17% across the Region. Based on previous trends, this season is expected to peak at around 50% positivity in late December or early January.
👥 Who is most at risk?
Severe outcomes from influenza, COVID-19 and RSV are most common in:
• Older adults
• Pregnant women
• People with chronic conditions
• Immunocompromised individuals
• Infants and young children (especially for RSV)
Protecting these groups is critical.
🛡️ How you can protect yourself and others
The COVID-19 pandemic showed that simple actions make a big difference. WHO/Europe recommends:
✔️ Get vaccinated (flu, COVID-19 and RSV where available)
✔️ Stay home when sick
✔️ Practice good hand and cough hygiene
✔️ Improve indoor ventilation
✔️ Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces
As influenza season gets underway, let’s use every tool we have to keep ourselves — and the most vulnerable among us — safe.
