GREEK STEREOTYPES; TRUE OR FALSE?
🔹People are outgoing and have huge hospitality mindset
… If they invite you over to their home they will take care of you to the fullest. Food is love language/ a way for a Greek to show that they appreciate you, so they will try to feed you if you get invited over.
🔹Greeks are the best at creative parking
…they are! You can find them parking in a roundabout too if they don’t find anywhere else to park (yes, I have seen that lol).
🔹All Greeks are named Konstantinos/ Kostas
… and ironically, my boyfriend does too. Konstantinos (Kostas is the nickname) is a very common guy name in Greece but other common names are Giannis, Giorgos, Nikolaos and Christos.
🔹Greeks have a frappe and cigarette for breakfast
…not completely wrong but not everyone does this. Greeks rarely drink frappe though. They prefer Freddo Espresso, Freddo Cappuccino or “Greek coffee” which is a hot coffee cooked in a small pot called “briki”. And yes, the cigarette.
🔹Greeks live at home until married
…This has some truth to it. However, in the 21st century many Greek children now move out before they marry to have their independence and privacy. Greeks have become less strict on this traditional rule. Since many people have very low salaries in Greece and economical issues though, sometimes they choose to live at home with their parents because it’s simply more economical.
🔹People are lazy / hate to work / people retire in their 40s
…This rumour started spreading in the economical crisis but which isn’t true. Of course there are people that are lazy, hate to work and possibly retire early as they exist in all countries. In general, the “common people” are extremely hard working, often work overtime, sometimes have two jobs to make a living and work for 3-4 euros/ hour though. Greeks love to enjoy their life with food, drinks etc, but that does NOT mean they are lazy and aren’t hard working. Greece is actually in the top 20 countries globally with the most working hours per month! The younger generation have to work hard for the mistakes the older generations and politicians have made. So no, this is the most wrong prejudice I hear about Greeks.
