My Dear Community

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of a great friend, colleague, teacher, mentor, and elder, Eliot Cowan. As some of you know, when Grandfather appeared to me in 1996 he asked me to find this man, who was also living in Mexico at the time. Eliot would help facilitate my connecting to the elders who would support me on my path. During these years we shared many adventures and challenges. Throughout our time together his unwavering devotion, integrity, and steadfastness in the face of the test that are all part of any true spiritual work and tradition would inspire me in profound ways. And these experiences and memories will continue to inspire me, as I hope for those who knew him, will find encouragement and solace in these remembrances.

His life was an example of living and serving people. This was his final illustration that we live in a continuum of birth, living, and death but also succession and continuance into the future. He has left his mark in the world and in our lives. May we honor what we learned from him by moving this forward for the benefit of all our relations.

Love in the time of loss,
David Wiley

There will be a public memorial service for Eliot Cowan on Wednesday, March 9, 2022. RSVP here: https://bluedeer.app.neoncrm.com/eventReg.jsp?event=2232&

In gratitude for a life generously lived.

"July 12 is the birthday of Don Elijio Panti. This is the 128th anniversary of his birth in San Andreas, Guatemala.

Born to Nicanor and Gertrudes Panti. He was carried to Belize in his mother’s reboso in 1893.

Don Elijio grew up in the small village of Succoutz close to the Gauatemalan border with Belize. His father was a mean drunk and an infamous necromancer who was mysteriously killed by someone whose daughter he had wronged.

He was an only child as had been his father and grandfather. Although young Elijio never went to school, from the age of fourteen he was able to grow all the food for his family.

He married Gomercinda Tzib of San Antonio Village in 1912 when he was fifteen and she was fourteen. He then apprenticed to traditional healer, Manuel Tzib, the oldest living member of the original Mexican settlers of San Antonio.

Later, he learned more about bush medicine from Jeronimo Requena while serving as a chiclero for the chewing gum industry in the 1930’s and finally started a small village practice in San Antonio.

After several years he received his Sastun, a tool of divination from The Maya Spirits and was then taught by the spirits through dream visions.

He became the most famous traditional healer of Belize and practiced his art for more than 70 years. Don Elijio was one of the last living Maya shamans or h’men of his era."

This is written by Dr Rosita Arvigo, naprapath and herbalist who was his apprentice and close friend for thirteen years.

We are grateful to have his wisdom, humor, kindness and abiding spirit in The Abdominal Therapy Collective.

What is Plant Spirit Medicine?

“Without doing battle, without making the disease the enemy, the spirits of nature have offered to bring us out of the dream of strife into the dream of wholeness.”

— Eliot Cowan

Plant Spirit Medicine healers call upon the extraordinary healing power of the plant spirits. Plant Spirit Medicine differs from many forms of herbalism in the importance it places on the relationship between the plants, the healer and the client. PSM healers look at the whole person, seeing all they have to offer, leaving judgment and criticism behind. Only by seeing a person in this way can we come to the root of a person’s imbalance and use the appropriate plants to provide them with what they need for health in their body, mind, and spirit. The result is a deeply effective, deeply elegant form of healing.

With Plant Spirit Medicine, we return the person to balance and harmony, to their greatest sense of themselves. Our ancestors lived this way – an existence in which there is no illusion of separation from nature. Plant Spirit Medicine restores us to this state of grace.
