έρευνα του Mary Mackillop Institute for Health Research, Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, στην Αυστραλία μελέτησε την επίπτωση ενός κατάγματος στο προσδόκιμο της ζωής ανθρώπων που φιλοξενούνταν σε οίκους ευγηρίας. Έδειξε ότι ανάλογα με το κάταγμα, φύλο, ηλικία, συννοσηρότητες και κληρονομικότητα, ένα κάταγμα μπορεί να μειώσει το προσδόκιμο επιβίωσης από 1-7 χρόνια, συγκριτικά με τους ανθρώπους που δεν είχαν υποστεί αντίστοιχο κάταγμα, καταδεικνύοντας τη σημασία του προληπτικού ελέγχου της ευθραυστότητας των οστών σε άνδρες και γυναίκες (περιοδικός έλεγχος οστεοπόρωσης).
