🟦Considered the embodiment of female beauty, the so-called "Bartlett Head" is one of the finest surviving Greek sculptures of the late Classical period.
It represents Aphrodite, goddess of love, and was originally set into a full-length statue. The sculpture's idealized grace, subtle modeling, and contrasting textures of skin and hair recall the workmanship and revolutionary style of Praxiteles, among the most celebrated of all classical sculptors.
Greek sculptures of this period and quality are very rare, and most are known today primarily through later Roman copies. See this work on view in our galleries of Greek and Roman art!
